Jul 8 11 5:01 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Talk about unlikely nominees for ambivalent ghost stories: I recall an episode of PETTICOAT JUNCTION in which everyone gets het up about whether one of the Shady Rest rooms is haunted. By episode's end almost everyone becomes convinced that they were just being over-imaginative. Only Kate gets to see the door of the haunted room mysteriously open and close, but she keeps mum, apparently convinced that the ghost is benign. I wouldn't cite GREEN ACRES here, though, because I think they started off with the talking pig, after which all the other weirdness semi-logically followed. NATURALISTIC! UNCANNY! MARVELOUS!

Jul 8 11 9:56 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Haven't seen GREEN ACRES since I was a wee lad. I recall an episode where Mr. Douglas would encounter people who would move their mouths soundlessly -- then you'd hear their voices (or you'd hear their lines before they moved their mouths). Mr. Douglas winces, puts a hand to his head, and says, "I feel like I'm living in the Twilight Zone!" And Mrs. Douglas' recipes (especially her pancakes) were a running joke. Finally they had an episode wherein the pancake batter came to life, and the Douglases slam a door on it, and it oozes under just like the Blob. I'm sure there have been plenty of Christmas movies/shows where a sidewalk Santa apparently was the real thing. You know, if you ignored all the sequels, HALLOWEEN might fit this thread. The first time I saw it in '78, the ending ("He really was the Boogie-Man!" "As a matter of fact, he was.") gave me a jolt. Most of CAMPFIRE TALES consists of teens telling stories around a fire. True, there are supernatural events in the stories depicted for the screen, but the framing story is non-supernatural . . . until . . .

Jul 10 11 1:38 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I hope to see that Petticoat Junction episode one day, they are showing it on METV down here and I watch it will getting ready for work in the morning. 1993's Siren's could be interpreted as having a supernatural element, and the final shot certainly makes it sem possible, but it's very subtle.

Jul 16 11 3:28 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Funny, last week I saw Cleopatra again on tv and was struck by its use of this device, in the scene where she prophesies the future. Then a couple of nights ago I saw the episode of TZ where a guy falls out a window because he imagines that a slot machine he's gotten hooked on is attacking him, and then in the last shot, where he's lying in the street dead, the camera pans up to show the machine he imagined standing a few feet away. Quite a few movies and tv episodes in which the supernatural story turns out to have been imaginary end with a character discovering some object from the imaginary story, like an earring or a business card, and reacting with what my sister likes to call (quoting 50s DC comics) a "Wha' th'?" A borderline example perhaps is Picnic at Hanging Rock, which is suggestive and inconclusive throughout but has a climactic moment that's much more strongly suggestive (though still inconclusive).

They were trying to downplay the supernatural and sci-fi elements of ZONE when presenting it to the CBS bigwigs, though, so that was cut from the script.

Jul 27 11 11:18 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Do "cartoonish" things in a story that isn't supposed to be cartoonish count? There are almost too many to name anyway. One I can always think of in the comedy Let's Do It Again, where the hypnotized boxer doesn't just become a great boxer, but gets almost superhuman strength a couple of times (like the punching bag knocked completely out of sight bit).

Oct 15 11 1:32 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm just mentioning this item because I was researching the The Trouble with Angels and Where Angels Go Trouble Follows films (which I mentioned elsewhere in The Birds' thread) and came up with this title and The Belles of St. Trinian as similar or recommended movies. There is one scene in which the girls are worshiping (?) a Chinese idol and there is an unexplained flare in response to their adoration. Not much of a nod (and there is no follow up,) but it is there. It was interesting seeing a sexed up Angela Lansbury, a Tom Bosley prior to Happy Days (already claiming to be too old to be the father of a pre-teen,) and Granpa Munster (Al Lewis) in a bit part. Also the scene where they are at the concert and people react negatively had me wondering if people at that time might actually have done this. It seems as if audiences should already be accustomed to Stravinski and such others. I didn't see anything wrong with that music... A 'modern' film that almost replicates Tow Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn (albeit with girls) and which is definitely a more grown up work that the Angel films or Parent Trap, and I am glad to have watched it with the kids as it led up to mature discussion. Almost all the eccentric behavior of the Alec Guinness character is inspired by the horoscope and other psychic advice given to him by his mother, and you're never told it ISN'T correct.

I believe it is mentioned in the DVD commentary on "Where Is Everybody?" Along with pointing out that the town square and its surrounding buildings were the sets familiar from BACK TO THE FUTURE.
