Would you say Home Alone is a genre film?
Probably not.
But if you recall carefully you will remember a scene in which there is a Stephen King type moment in which the mother perceives via ESP that something is seriously wrong with her kid. I say Stephen King-like, because he would insert subtle nods to other of his stories, either mentioning an aspect of Cujo, Salem's Lot or The Shining into a different story. When this happened in Home Alone, it made me think of King. I don't particularily enjoy Home Alone, but I did like this little fantastic touch.
We should probably avoid comedies of a certain type, because some elements are added for the sake of funny which otherwise make no sense whatsoever: For example the fact that a singing bush and an invisible swordsman appear in a scene of Three Amigos... (WTF!)
What other non-genre films can you think of which veer into The Zone for just a touch?
Probably not.
