Aug 8 12 9:13 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I remember seeing someone involved with the Jack the Giant Killer effects on the Skipper Frank cartoon show in Los Angeles in 1961 and he gave a stop motion demonstration with Cormoran and the Harpy. He also had the close-up leg of the Harpy. I don't know who it was but it definitely was not Danforth. This guy was older and wore a suit. This kind of thing was not uncommon. Harryhausen had appeared on the Dick Whittinghill show in 1957 with the Ymir puppet. In 1956 Warner Bros. ran a film segment on the making of The Animal World dinosaur sequence on their Warner Bros. Presents television show. The short film showed the armatures before being cast and the final models as well as animation scenes. It ran about 5 minutes and should still be around somewhere. I also saw a promo film on television for Beast of Hollow Mountain that showed the beast walking through a wild west graveyard, a shot not in the film. I suspect a lot of these promo films might still exist and maybe tapes of the tv appearances.

Aug 8 12 9:26 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Ooooo -- clore's pic post reminded me about the tentacled toad head thing. Isn't it unique among fantasy monsters? I can't think of anything like it, certainly up to that date. And it also reminded me that the 2-headed giant's heads were different from the 1-headed giant.

Aug 8 12 9:49 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It could have been Phil Kellison but the guy on the show wore glasses. I met Phil years later and he didn't look like the guy on Skipper Frank. As I recall this guy did not have much hair.

I do like the way it wraps itself around the two-headed giant to defeat it. Just prior to that, the way its eyeball rolls back into place after being knocked out is rather unnerving.

You're right about the lack of any skin texture on the tentacled beast but I love that critter just the same. There was an earlier version with much more detail that was animated for some tests but for some reason wasn't used in the final film. Wonder why they decided to go with the other design, anyone know? I saw this puppet at Wah Chang's back about 1970 and it was in pretty bad shape even then. The photo below is from the internet.

Aug 9 12 2:20 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Danforth mentioned yet another sea monster, resembling a dinosaur, which was sculpted but never made into a stop motion puppet. One of the unused puppets was the creature he preferred, but I don't remember which one.

Aug 9 12 11:56 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	What strikes me about this photo is the guy leisurely smoking a pipe like Bing Crosby while engaging in a process that takes a tremendous amount of concentration and recall. Was the thing even lit? The smoke would show up in the frame and ruin the shot, wouldn't it? Perhaps it was unlit and he just liked to keep it in his mouth like a binky.

The animator in the photo is Tom Holland, who apparently was fond of his pipe, as almost all photos of him I've seen show it. He did the animation of Cormoran's dance. I also found this still, which I can't remember being in the final film. Also there was no blood seen in the final battle, so could this be a test still?
