I always thought these were neat little films with a great interplay between Chester Morris, Dick "Roller Derby" Lane, and George E. Stone.

Oct 19 06 11:39 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	That's good news for some folks. I got a complete set from the Movie Channel some years ago. Robert Osborne was the host at the time and they showed a double feature every Sunday morning for 7 weeks. I like the films, although they are not my favorites. I prefer the CRIME DOCTOR and INSPECTOR TRENT films. Maybe TCM will be showing more of the Columbia detectives for those who don't have them.

I can't recall the title just now, but I don't think it's on the TCM list. Not sure I think too much of the somewhat bland Chester Morris, but was delighted to see the lovely Rochelle Hudson along for the ride. Fast paced it certainly was, but didn't seem half as strong as either The Falcon and The Saint. Will have to try a few more and see if Morris grows on me. I think Chester Morris was a little TOO sarcastic with the character. But, I did like the Coney Island setting & the Mr. Mechanical Man character.

Jan 28 07 10:51 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Chester Morris was never bland at all. You can really see how hard-working he was in comparison to many B-Film leads. Check out FLIGHT FROM GLORY, FIVE CAME BACK, THE GAY BRIDE and numerous others. He was always very energetic and entertaining. BTW - TCM will be playing the 1929 Chester Morris/ Roland West film, ALIBI, a triumph of early sound film on Feb 7th - 8th. This film came out in early 1929, at least 6 months before APPLAUSE and makes wonderful use of sound despite some typical Roland West staginess.

Jan 30 07 11:11 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have a print of BLIND ALLEY, the 1938 drama with Ralph Bellamy and Chester Morris. It was remade as THE DARK PAST with Bill Holden in the Morris role of a pyschopathic killer who has a recurring nightmare. Chester is superb in the original. I would love to have seen Chester Morris on stage. I only recently learned he played the Walter Pidgeon role in the stage original of ADVISE AND CONSENT. Morris was a longtime regular on TO TELL THE TRUTH. Real movie fans will remember his brother Adrian Morris as Bogart's front man in ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES and Grant Withers' partner in RADIO PATROL.

Ralph Bellamy is also great as the psychiatrist who has to deal with him on psychological terms to save his life. One great movie!

Mar 29 07 1:29 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I dont remember ever seeing a Boston Blackie movie prior to last night but having seen a couple (and after taping a few from TCM) I am glad that they did run a whole passle of em. They really are formulaic films without a lot of verisimilitude but they are fun time-wasters. I am woefully under-exposed to Columbia B-movie product. What Ive seen thus far has really been a lot of fun. They also make me appreciate the relative sophistication of the RKO series B-movies. [Recording the last two that they showed]; so I'll watch them at a later time. I can never figure out why the B.B.'s were so popular? Upon watching them, I came across this observation...I'll think the script is going along pretty well, then something will be inserted that is really...well, DUMB! Not, the obvious P.C. stuff. But, having certain characters, do something that completely defuses any semblance of credibility. For example: In the one tale (I believe it was "Boston Blackies' Rendezvous"), the two crooks are coming across as pretty ruthless, they shoot the pawn broker, because he is going to answer the front door to the cops. But then, then, right in front of the police, they proceed to pretend they are mannequins. Since this was a Columbia Picture, I felt like I was watching a Three Stooges short. I don't think I've seen this being done by the villians or heavy's in the other Detective films, like The Falcon or Charlie Chan? Sure, this might have been performed by the comic foils in the pictures; the Allen Jenkins' or Key Luke's. But the villians? This completely diminishes any of the "Danger" elements that is the crux of a detective mystery. I suppose if you like Chester Morris, you'll want to watch these particular films. But, as a fan of the old detective movies series, I'll stick with Sherlock Holmes, Charlie Chan and The Falcon.

Mar 30 07 5:06 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The real mystery surrounding the quality of the Boston Blackies is that they were produced and written by the same Columbia production unit that did the Whistler, Crime Doctor, and Ellery Queen films. The latter are all pretty good, while Blackie they seem to have farted off just to create another series. I think it's commendable that TCM is showing a bunch of Columbia product now, and series mysteries are as much "classic movies" as the MGM and Warner titles that they've run into the ground, or Citizen Kane. Speaking of the Three Stooges, lots of their sets are recognizable in these mystery films, especially trains and apartments. Chester Morris did 14 Boston Blackie films, and they showed eight of them Wednesday night. The six they didn't show are BOSTON BLACKIE'S CHINESE VENTURE, THE PHANTOM THIEF, CHANCE OF A LIFETIME, ALIAS BOSTON BLACKIE, BOSTON BLACKIE BOOKED ON SUSPICION, and A CLOSE CALL FOR BOSTON BLACKIE. 4e once saw Blackie's sidekick George E Stone walking down Hollywood boulevard, with a gorgeous but hooker-looking woman on his arm. 4e said "aren't you George E Stone?" and Stone snarled "What about it?"
