Hercules was an adaption (in the Roman Empire) of Heracles, but the Romans turned him into a wandering hero, probably in step with the Hercules movies. Heracles (in the Greek myth) had some problems (not as bad as Sinbad, who was a psychopath). Heracles was the one killed his children in a fit of madness. He was married 4 times (none to Iole, who had a role in the story) and-ahem-had a few male lovers. Wikipedia has two separate pages. one had Hercules, a different page had Heracles. Of course both have a lot of similarities, but Hercules was "lighter" in tone. I remember one of the pepla had the hero named Heracles to "make it a little more high-browed".
I'm gonna stay away from Wikipedia to save my heroes in my mind.

In its purest form, Homer is spoken, not read.

They cannot or refuse to take alpha males serious especially if they come from Western Europe. They have to suggest a gay element.
For someone of a traditional Western storytelling heritage I don't think a Hercules is automatically taken as a joke character. Or at least it wasn't.
Tarzan, Doc Savage, Conan, John Carter, Flash Gordon.
I think the media has encouraged the dismantling of the white alpha male since the 60s at least.
I heard a rumor Arnie took speech lessons to keep his accent--is it because the idea of a muscular male of Teutonic line (as HP Lovecraft might say) must be funny talking--not so much because the general public demands it, but because that is what the studio owners like? Granted, Arnie's physique is exaggerated, but how come Italy didnt make a joke of it?
It does fit into the general theme of "white man is a failure and patriarchy is always bad" which I think creeps into the majr Hollywood entertainment media since the 60s.
In the typical peplum the hero was a nice guy and not stupid either.
I also notice, having watched a couple of woman-starring euro genre films like the Adventures of Mary Read and the Belle Starr Story that they didnt need Friedan or Steinem to influence them on feminine portrayals (then again neither did Robert E Howard or DW Griffith--wasn't Mountain Girl in Intolerance 1916 a swashbuckling heroine of ancient Babylon? Been a while since I watched it but I remember her swinging around on ropes and firing off arrows from a bow).
One could also question why there has been such a focus on the anorexic female--you didnt get that in those peplum films. One theory I had heard was that fashion designers tended to be gay so they preferred skinny women. Not sure if that explains it though.
