Earlier in this strand, I came out in favor of The Mummy's Hand as a favorite.

This afternoon, I revisited The Mummy's Ghost, and found it to be meritorious, even in its simplicity, flaws, quirky aspects, and players.
Tom Hervey, far too old to convincingly play even a senior in college, is pushy, grumpy, and short-sighted. A perfect protagonist to dislike!

Amina is petulant, self-hating, insecure, and insipid. A perfect heroine to loath despite her physical beauty.

Kharis is within inches of retreiving his beloved, only to have her snatched away by capricious Gods, and to experience betrayal at the hands of another high priest.

Professor Norman is the classic instructor. Easily goaded off-course by toadies in the classroom, he has an eye for the lovely Miss Mc Clean, and the old stager entertains her question regarding tana leaves. Clean, indeed!  Then, he atones with an admonition regarding the idea that the Mapleton Mummy is insignificant despite the fact that the Professor is consumed in research regarding the very same topic! Those academics!

Law enforcement is also presented awkwardly. The "Inspector" who shows up half way through the picture takes over the proceedings. The Sheriff, who presumably knows the situation best, defers to the Inspector in an obsequious manner.

Perhaps the thing that caught me today in reviewing the film, harkened back to my childhood when I first saw this picture. The idea of digging a deep hole as a trap for Kharis really appealed to me. And, when Mrs. Evans nearly wandered into the trap, the intrigue was comnplete.

Of course, when Amina is carried into the swamp, the finale was so unexpected.

That Kharis killed the deceitful High Priest was poetic justice.

As I mentioned, the fact that almost everyone in the movie is so unlikeable is a fun aspect.

Remember when Hervey, Amina, and that annoying mutt,"Peanuts" were parking romantically, and an elderly member of the posse came tumbling through the bushes?  Tom's reaction was, "Well, you are on solid ground now, so don't let us keep you."  Not only was Hervey apparently 4-F for the war, he was inconsiderate as well. "Can I give you a lift, old man?" No. Beat it.

While The Mummy's Hand gets high marks for genuine enjoyment, The Mummy's Ghost scores points for its cynical, humorous portrayals.
