Bobby Murcer, a personable, popular five-time All-Star who went on to a successful broadcasting career with the New York Yankees, died Saturday after a battle
with brain cancer. He was 62.

I heard the announcement of this during the Fox baseball broadcast today and actually shed a couple of tears. Bobby Murcer was a good ballplayer, a good
broadcaster, and from EVERYTHING I've heard or read, a genuinely nice man. He also showed terrific courage in the face of his ultimately fatal disease,
even making it into the broadcast booth for a couple of games this season. There are lots of good ballplayers, plenty of good sportscasters, but there are
never enough good people. He'll be genuinely missed.

He was supposed to be The Next Mickey Mantle. He had a good playing career, but didn't live up to that expectation. Who could?

Starting back in the sixties, and continuing for 15 years or so, there was at least one new Mickey Mantle every year. Tom Tresh, Bobby Murcer, even Clint
Hurdle with the Mets. It was an impossible expectation, of course, but Murcer was probably the best of the lot.

Bobby Murcer was built up far too much by the New York Press who expected a new Mickey Mantle. Well theres only one Mickey Mantle , and Murcer was a scapegoat
when the Yankees strugged through some poor teams,
Bobby Murcer did better after he was traded, and noone expected him to be a legend. RIP Mr Murcer. |

Just got back today from a Tennessee vacation, totally removed from tv and news. Heard about this today. Was too young to remember much about him as a player,
but he was one of my favorite announcers. Seemed like a very nice man. I will miss him.
God rest his soul.
My whole life I've been playing jacks with a square ball.

Hey guys! I was also saddened to hear of Bobby Murcer's passing, mostly because of what Rick said...he was "good people" I always felt he got the "s#itty end of the stick" during his first tenure with the Yanks in the late '60's/early '70's (primarily
because although he was a solid player, the team stunk), but when he returned in the early 80's, he was practically worshipped (and rightfully so) by New
York fans who realized he had deserved better treatment/recognition.
