Sep 3 08 9:26 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Man, I just can't shake the thought of Nighy as Moriarty. I've been revising a page proof of Gaslight Grimoire this week and saw the above photo and suggestion just as I was starting on Kim Newman's story "The Red Planet League" this afternoon. The story is told by Colonel Moran and features Moriarty throughout. I kept imagining Nighy delivering the dialogue and man, it worked a treat in my mind's eye, right down to the oscillating head movements and all. It really is a genius piece of casting. I have to say I agree that a reversal of Law and Downey in the roles might hold a greater appeal for me. Oct 1 08 2:42 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Bill, The Sherlockian answer to your query is a bit convoluted although the short answer is a simple "no"...at least as far as a direct statement indicating age in any of Conan Doyle's Holmes stories. The long answer, based on inference from the questionable supposition that Holmes was 60 in 1914 (His Last Bow), is that both Holmes and Watson would be in their late 20s at the time of their first meeting in A STUDY IN SCARLET. Sherlockian consensus varies, but dating their meeting in A STUDY IN SCARLET as taking place in 1881 is fairly reasonable, although some argue for 1882 or 1884. Trust that helps... Oct 1 08 6:30 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Depends on what year the film is set in, but I certainly don't have a problem with a 43 year old Holmes and a 36 year old Watson, particularly as Downey seems somewhat younger than his actual age. High time we had a more youthful approach to the classic Holmes and Watson pairing. I find it somewhat ironic that with the Hollywood penchant for casting young actors in all sorts of inappropriate roles, in this instance, even younger actors could have worked without compromising the material.
