Striking posters, but some goofy perspective issues on the background characters. I'd also be happier seeing Downey with a magnifying glass than a gun, but this is action Sherlock rather than detective Sherlock, so not a big surprise or out of line. Jul 12 11 2:10 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I suppose the outside chance that Holmes might groom himself in a bit more gentlemanly fashion is out for this movie as well. Looks like more of the same, but magnifying the things that did NOT make the previous film Sherlock Holmes. I hope I'm wrong. It DOES have Stephen fry as Mycroft, I believe, so there is that.

May 10 12 10:20 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	i rewatched the blu-ray of sherlock holmes. i didn`t care for how it looked in trailers, tv spots and other promotions before it came out.i didn`t care too much for it when i saw it on home video.and i only liked it more the second viewing. downeys holmes was too scruffy.if it was just a matter of being bored and not cleaning up when he stayed in his rooms why did he not clean up better when he met watson and mary at the resturant?and going by the theory he didn`t care for mary and did not want to ,why when he was deep in a case as he was in the very beginning was he as scruffy looking as when he was holed up for weks and bored?holmes looked like a hobo .holmes in the storys had too much respect for himself to be like that all the time. yes holmes was a great fighter in the things that were mentioned.however the balance of action and investigation were wrong.the action in the beginning was fine because it was the conclusion of a case,apparently.from then it was find a clue,fight find another clue fight, jump out a window, find a clue .fight.the stories had action but not that much in a single story. to me it is an ok watch but it is hard for me to see downey as holmes.law as watson i did see work.that helped some. downey did sort of give the feel of someone in the time period the stories take place.everyone else did except for the charactor of irene adler.she as someone else mentioned seemed to be more 2009 in her manners. it was an fair action detective movie.too bad it was not more like sherlock holmes.

Jul 22 12 6:26 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hi people - I have to say I can't approve of RDJ as Sherlock Holmes, any more than I can approve of Nicole Williamson. I think the point is Holmes is one of those characters that has to look right, and if he doesn't look right then everything else is pointless. It's like Gandalf without the beard; there are just some characters that need the physical handle in order for you to start the process of belief-suspension. Doesn't matter how brilliant an actor is doing the part, if Holmes isn't tall and lean and saturnine and aquiline - he ain't Holmes. Period. Maybe I only think that because I'm a devoted Baz-Babe and absolutely believe Rathbone was the definitive and embodied Sherlock Holmes of all time, or maybe I'm just boringly and nerdily literal. (I mean I watched Young Bess and couldn't get close to buying Jean Simmons as the eponymous heroine when she was a brunette! -- c'mon, everyone knows Elizabeth had red hair. It's part of what she was. If she's gonna be a brunette then why can't she also be a guy? Either historical/literary constraints matter or they don't.) (But then to be fair, both Wontner and Brett at his best looked as much if not more like the iconic Holmes as Rathbone did!)

Downey COULD have headed in the right direction, instead of looking like a little Victorian bum. Why the conscious "F.U." to the image? What ball does it advance down any court? Sure, you can make your Tarzan a slight guy with short red hair. But what's the point?

Wontner did have a resemblance to the drawings - quite a striking one really - but he lacked those other Holmes essentials, vitality and intense mental energy - which both Rathbone and Brett brought to the role. With both Brett and Rathbone you could see the brilliant, sparking mind behind the eyes. My favorite Watson of all time is Edward Hardwicke. The perfect blend of affability and quiet, unassuming intelligence. THE BAZ: the multifarious talent & gorgeousness of Basil Rathbone

Yes, he's a bit a bit overeager, but it worked well relative to the earlier and younger Brett. I like to think of Hardwicke as the more somber Watson, greatly affected by the "death" of his friend.

Assuming that Doyle cleaned Holmes up for presentation to the Victorian and Edwardian reading public, the "real" Holmes could easily have been short and scruffy looking as portrayed by Downey. Wilder played on this a bit in PRIVATE LIFE, where Holmes complained to Watson that he had described him as too tall in his published stories. Jackson used something of the same conceit in his KING KONG remake. His movie works better if you think of it as the "real" story, and the 1933 movie as the Hollywood telling of that story. In both cases, if you go into the movies looking for a straight forward literary interpretation you'll be disappointed. But if you can buy into the conceit, they're both more enjoyable. - Clark hollowaypages.com
