I've decided to remedy that on my bus rides home from work and start with "Scandal in Bohemia." As I read them I tried picturing the various interpretations in my head, including RDJ. I simply can NOT place his version into these stories. There are some similarities between them, but takes as a whole RDJ is much too unlike Holmes to accept. Even if you want to make a case for this theory of the truth behind the stories, Watson comments on the scruffiness of countless other characters in great detail, as well as describing Holmes and his methods in equal detail. If Holmes' appearance was somehow being hidden by Watson, then Watson would also have to alter the reactions of everyone they ever meet anywhere. There are too many stories where Watson comments on someone's appearance if they're less than presentable. People of the time would react to RDJ the vagrant in the same way. Deep water is dark and restful and full of peace.
