"Move over boys. I'm one of the gang now."
One of my favorite zombie films ever. Mantan Moreland's wonderful performance highlights this fun Monogram flick. The Academy Award nominated music is also memorable. I enjoyed this so much as a kid, belly-laughing at Mantan's one-liners. It was shown regularly during the late '60s on Philly's Channel 48 and then pretty much disappeared.
Finding the ALPHA DVD a while back was great, giving me the chance to share the film with my kids (who also loved it). The print was disappointing - jittery and beat up with dozens of splices, but getting to see Mantan again was worth it. I came across a FRONT ROW DVD version hoping for a better print, but it looked virtually the same. Last summer, I picked up TREELINE's Horror Classics 50 Movie Pack (a great deal BTW). Finally checked out KING OF THE ZOMBIES on this set today. It's the best I've seen yet. Didn't have any splices (you don't miss any of the dialogue as was the case with ALPHA). The print is also very clear, though some of the dark scenes are a bit washed out. Still, overall it's a very nice copy.
