THE H-MAN, BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE, MOTHRA and REBIRTH OF MOTHRA DVD Release 2009! |
Lead | |
|
According to an interview with Mike Schlesinger of Sony conducted by Ian Freidman, this has been penciled in for '09: a box set featuring dual language
versions of THE H-MAN (1958), BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE, MOTHRA (1961) and REBIRTH OF MOTHRA 3 (1998). Check out my blog THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND GODZILLA for the details! Thanks to Ian Freidman of HK DVD News and Brad Thompson!

Happy, I could be of help. Hopefully, they will have you on the DVD for commentary tracks. I mean who else has written and published a official bio on Eiji
Tsuburaya? One which incidentally had a big display setup in the book section at the Virgin Megastore at 14th St in NYC.

Hey guys! FINALLY!!! I'm especially happy because "The H-Man" and "Battle" are two of the few films that I never got around to
picking-up the pricey Region 2 discs from Toho Video.

I so want an R1 of MOTHRA! The other films are a pleasant bonus! MOTHRA 3 is especialy unexpected. Perhaps it bodes well for the 90's Godzilla series
seeing dual language release? Hint hint.

Who has the rights to Megalon, Godzilla 85, and Biollante? Aren't these the only Godzillas not out in R1?

Thursday, July 3, 2008 So, does this mean we'll get both the English and the Japanese versions of MOTHRA, BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE and THE H-MAN after all, complete with respective opening and closing credits, original dubs, etc.? |

Can I put in a preference, if we are only going to have the Japanese main feature, could the credits, or at least the title card be in Japanese? That was my
one major beef with Sony's earlier DVDs of toho films, not having the Japanese titles. They look much nicer than the English ones!

If my memory serves, GODZILLA VS. MEGALON's rights are with Toho. They offered it to Sony who turned it down due to the public domain problems in the past
with multiple VHS copies. Toho's LA-based legal team are doing their best to keep the public domain copies off the market. GODZILLA 1985 rests with
Artisan, I believe. They have no plans to release it. At issue is the fact that Toho wants the international version, THE RETURN OF GODZILLA to replace New
World's GODZILLA 1985 with Raymond Burr inserts. Finally, I believe Miramax still controls the rights to GODZILLA VS. BIOLLANTE. There are no plans to
release it. Like its immediate predecessor, these are owned by studios with only one Godzilla title and little incentive to exploit. The titles remain parts of
large packages of films that will likely tie them up for a good many years to come.

Excellent news if you can talk them into it, Mike! And be sure, that I'll help spread the news. I announced this upcoming release to a very enthusiastic
applause at G-Fest in Chicago this past weekend -- people are very excited about it, thanks for going to bat in getting these out!

>Why would Toho want Return of Godzilla to replace Godzilla 1985? Toho's English version could sync fine with the Japanese print, and they didn't
seem to have a problem with the Raymond Burr version of the 1954 film
Maybe years of critical acclaim for the original GOJIRA has made them realize the error of their ways. Anyway, I'm going to be all over this release from Sony, unless it's only sold in US Best Buys... Professor Von X |

As far as I know, Sony has done well enough with the Godzilla films, but MEGALON is the only one of the three they can go after and its not likely to be a
standalone release. As for the two eighties entries, we just have to hope the rights eventually expire and revert to Toho.

Over-saturation of PD discs that had previously flooded the market. I could see Sony repackaging some of the films -- the audio on them needs some work (the
5.1 on the Japanese tracks are wonky, especially on SON OF GODZILLA) -- and including MEGALON. Something along the lines of HEDORAH, GIGAN, MEGALON and
MECHAGODZILLA being packaged together -- with new menus and perhaps some token extras (such as written liner notes).

No, that's not the point. Ask anyone in the business, once a PD title floods the market, the potential of sales for a licensed version is diminished. This
is precisely why Sony passed on MEGALON. I'm not making this up or guessing, this is what I was told by parties involved. Sadly, a few
thousand fans are not going to cause much of a rise in Sony coffers for them to go to the expense of licensing MEGALON. The bottom line is indeed the bottom
line.

What needs to happen is for Toho to be ready to sue the pants off of anyone who attempts a Public Domain DVD release. They can at least boast its the only DVD
release of the film (barring the MST3K version). Admittedly its probably timed too soon to all the early '90s Public Domain VHS releases to make it an
appealing choice for Sony. The fact that a Public Domain DVD is now available for SMOG MONSTER doesn't bode well for it either. The same problem happened
when Public Domain VHS copies of GODZILLA VS. THE COSMIC MONSTER appeared in the early '90s after Sony released the GODZILLA VS. MECHAGODZILLA
international version on VHS. The rip-off's never help. The best choice would be if Classic Media or Media Blasters would opt for it since their profit
margins are likely lower than Sony's in the first place.
