I've done comparing on almost every release that has come out on Lugosi's PD films. I'm a perfectionist when it comes to image quality. Everyone looks for different things, I suppose in image quality. Some look for sharpness while others look for an overall pleasing image (a sharper image will at times look grainier, for example.) What I do when comparing the various DVD releases of these films is turn the sharpness control and contrast control to the max on my television, that way I know really what kind of an image is on the disc. Then I can adjust the image the way I like it later. But it does show the true image. For example, I agreed with several asessments here that The Ape Man is best from Triton, until I checked it this way. Actually it is second best. IMHO, the best release of The Ape Man has been from Alpha (believe it or not!) I've read that some have said it is murky looking, possibly it looks a little murky but the sharpness is definately better than the Triton release. In fact what I found by going frame by frame is that they are actually struck from the same print (same exact film burns, etc.) but Triton took some of the sharpness out to make it look pleasing to the eye and brought the image closer as well. The title on the Triton release appears to be from a different print however (it looks really good) but the rest of the film isn't really as good as the Alpha print. As far as the two Lugosi presents releases of Bowery at Midnight and Devil Bat, the extras are nice but the image doesn't get close to Roan's! Here are my choices of Lugosi's PD DVDs that are the best:
White Zombie 1932: Roan!
The Gorilla 1939: Roan! (with Nabonga 1944)
Devil Bat 1941: Roan! (with Corpse Vanishes)
The Invisible Ghost 1941: Roan!
Spooks Run Wild 1941 (none are as good as the print
TCM showed, Alpha's is horrible!)
Black Dragons 1942: Roan! (Black and Blue Collection
with Bluebeard and Black Raven)
Corpse Vanishes 1942: Roan! (with Devil Bat)
Bowery at Midnight 1942: Roan!
The Ape Man 1943: Alpha! (reasons stated above)
Ghosts on the Loose 1943: Roan!
One Body Too Many 1944: Jury is still out, I've only
compared a couple with so far Alpha being on top)
Scared to Death 1946: Triton/Slingshot! (with Devil Bat)
