Why does the UK use 50 Hz?

Early on, there were many frequencies being used at the same time by the various power companies. It all boils down to who had the largest market share. Since the US and Europe are separated by an ocean, large power generating equipment was developed in parallel. Westinghouse liked 60 Hz because it worked better with arc lighting as well as incandescent lights and motors. The UK and Europeans felt 50 Hz better suited their needs.
