Jun 28 11 2:01 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	My "What If ...?" would be about what stars today would make for great villains on COLUMBO. I can just picture someone like Gene Simmons actually doing a good job in a Johnny Cash type of role. Or Jon Stewart as "an cable network news anchorman who kills off a rival on-air." Or an intense Terry O'Quinn as a former Navy Seal/novelist who takes out someone who knows too much about his past." Maybe Daivd Tennant as a politician who kills off a nobody drug contact only to find Columbo on his heels. Possibilities are endless there, I'm sure. BTW, when will we ever see Levinson & Link's MURDER BY NATURAL CAUSES released on DVD?

Jun 28 11 2:07 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think the best COLUMBO villains were arrogant wealthy people who seemed to come from the upper crust, and who looked down on Columbo for being so deferential and middle-class, and a mere employee. Hugh Laurie, Wendie Malick, Jeffery Donovan (played a good villain in a Monk episode), Kelsy Grammer. And, IF they EVER decided to (gulp!) remake the series, I think Mark Ruffalo would make a good Columbo. NO actor will have the same mannerisms and delivery, but he's a good actor and can easily look the part. Bit, I bite my tongue! I really don't think a remake would be a good idea.

Jul 1 11 5:41 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I watched THE BLOODY BROOD on Internet Archive the other night. Falk is terrific in this 1959 crime saga set in the beatnik scene of Toronto. He's a jive talking beatnik drug dealer and murderer, who feeds a guy a burger with ground glass in it!

I understand why they were written; they didn't want people to overlook the rest of Falk's career, a reasonable thought. But this also had the effect of somehow diminishing Lt. Columbo; after all, he was "merely" a TV detective who was the same in every episode. Falk's other performances showed his versatility and range--and sure enough, they do. But I don't think they need to be praised at the expense of his work as Lt. Columbo. Conan Doyle despaired that people LOVED Sherlock Holmes but didn't pay a lot of attention to his other work--but today, they're still writing Holmes pastiches, still filming Doyle's own adventures over and over. There are some characters that take on a life bigger and stronger than their creators, or even a team of creators backing up a splendid actor, as with Falk as Columbo. He shouldn't be praised >at the expense< of Columbo; his work as Columbo may well last for even more generations. The crafty, not-really-clumsy police lieutenant is one of the greatest detectives in the history of crime fiction--and that greatness was >mostly< because of Peter Falk. So let's hear it loudly: OH, THERE'S JUST ONE MORE THING....

Jul 24 11 8:55 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Just watched the episode LAST SALUTE TO THE COMMODORE. It was definitely one of the stranger episodes. Odd pacing, slightly different format, and Columbo acting more eccentric than usual. Might have to do with Patrick McGoohan directing. The episode is kind of paced the way he speaks. Then there's the odd whistling at the end while he has a cigar in his mouth!

Jul 24 11 9:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Without giving too much away, Columbo uses a kind of word association to help him find the murderer (who's played by one of those great character actors, Fred Draper, who usually played SMALLER parts on the show). Another good parody is on the comedy album "The Watergate Comedy Hour" by Burns and Schreiber. In one routine Richard Nixon announces his choice for a special investigator on the whole matter, and it's Columbo, who keeps pestering him with off the point questions - "That's a great suit. Do you mind if I ask you where you got that suit?"

Apr 9 12 9:49 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I just started watching COLUMBO, as well as THE ROCKFORD FILES, for the first time, via Netflix. So far, I have the 2 Columbo pilots and the Spielberg-directed first regular episode, "One for the Book", under my belt, as well as the pilot and first regular episode of ROCKFORD. Good stuff. Netflix is a little weird with COLUMBO, though, as some episodes are streamed, but some (like these first three) are disc-only. I remember both shows when they were in first-run, as my dad watched them regularly, so the NBC MYSTERY MOVIE open and music, the ROCKFORD open, and the personas of both characters are burned in my brain, but I have no recall of any specific episodes or guest stars... they were all just "people talking" to me then, and I was more wrapped up in fanciful things like THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN and DARK SHADOWS reruns, which a kid's mind could wrap around more easily. Later on, I just took both detective shows for granted, as they always seemed to be on, but I never bothered to check them out. Now, I'm having fun seeing these shows that I "knew", but didn't really "know" before. "I say ALL you scientists are CRACKPOTS! Nothing is going to happen..." I did watch several of the later tv movie COLUMBOS with the father-in-law when they were new, over Jack Daniels and potato chips, but had nothing to really compare them with until recently (except for maybe the PERRY MASON tv movies which were also new concurrently, and which old people seem to instinctively gravitate to, along with MATLOCK and MURDER SHE WROTE). With the old COLUMBOs, since there's no real mystery involved, and the mechanics of the crime, with its "tape delay" alibis and clock chime misdirection often being rudimentary by today's high tech and fast paced forensic standards, the real pleasure here is in the actors and the acting. Watching hardened spies like Robert Culp and Patrick McGoohan squirm for ninety minutes is a source of sheer joy.
