Feb 24 12 6:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I had already been a huge Bela fan thanks to an earlier decade showing Universal horrors, but Night Flight was definitely my intro to his Monogram and cheapie work. They used to love to show INVISIBLE GHOST and the shortened version of THE PHANTOM CREEPS, as I recall.

Here is another stab at posting it: Every time I watch this I always wonder how Lugosi manages to kill people by bathrobeicide. It is mentioned that they are strangled but it seems more like they are suffocated or something. To me, being smoking jacketed would be rather unpleasant.

I think it's Sally Blane on the left, and probably Polly Ann at the bottom. If that's correct, then sister Georgianna is at the top. Though she was the one sister who evidently didn't act, she did marry Ricardo Montalban, so...KHAAAANN!

Greg at Sinister Cinema has them and while they aren't all that good, it's great to finally get see some of these "lost" films. The creepy shadow character that introduces each one is what is most outstanding in each. Now where are the other three?? Man, the genes were sure good in that Young family. What a bunch of cuties! Teala Loring and Lisa Gaye are seated. The two-shot is of Lisa Gaye and Debra Paget. There are lots of photos of these two, together and individually ...but not nearly so much of poor lonely Teala. A not-much-more-than-teenage Ruth Roman provided the story for ZORRO'S BLACK WHIP (1944).>> Are we absolutely certain that the "Helen Martin" who co-wrote INVISIBLE GHOST is the same Helen Martin who appeared on such popular TV shows as GOOD TIMES and WHAT'S HAPPENING? According to IMDB, they are indeed the same person, but of course I'm well aware that that doesn't mean much of anything. According to Wikipedia, Helen Martin made her stage debut in Orson Welles' production of NATIVE SON in 1941 (the same year INVISIBLE GHOST was produced), so I suppose it's possible that she wrote the script. And if she did, what was her exact relationship to her co-writer, Al Martin (who, I was surprised to discover, later co-wrote INVASION OF THE SAUCER MEN)?

Lewis' directing is a cut above yer typical programmer and Polly Ann Young is a major doll. Did you know that Betty Compson( Mrs. Kessler ) was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar in 1929? Wow! And we think it was beneath Bela to be in these movies!

Jul 29 12 1:55 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I watched IG again recently and I didn't see any rationale for the strange hypnotic influence Compson has over Lugosi. The first time he sees her from the window, she mutters something about how he'd kill anyone. But though he can't have possibly heard her, unless you allow for telepathy, he does go forth and commit the first of his killings. At the start of the film, Lugosi's character becomes a bit balmy on the anniversary of his wife's death, in that he pretends she's having dinner with him and talks to an empty chair as if she's there, but he's not totally unhinged. The script just barely suggests that the wife ran away with someone and survived a car crash, drifting around for years until she decided to wander back to the estate, where one of the servants takes in but keeps her secret for no clear reason. (Maybe he read his JANE EYRE and just thought that every good estate should have a "madwoman in the attic.") But what's so weird about the film-- which I enjoyed BTW-- is that when Lugosi's enslavement is revealed at the end, absolutely no one wonders how the hell it happened. It's almost as if we're back in medieval times where everyone takes the "evil eye" for granted. I realize the scriptwriter was mostly trying to connect plot-points, but he certainly came at things in an unusual manner. Most poverty row horrors don't even bother trying to do anything beyond the expected and predictable. And whatever else you can say about IG, it sure ain't predictable. NATURALISTIC! UNCANNY! MARVELOUS!

Oct 29 12 12:57 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I saw IG last night for the very first time. Wow. Rarely has such an illogical film been so entertaining. The directing and the performances carry it along well enough, and you keep waiting for a payoff, but then...nothing. I was originally hoping that it was produced in the shadow of Hitchcock's Spellbound, but no. IG was 1941 and SB was 1945. But that's how it feels to me: poverty row's attempt at a psychological film, written by people without even a dime store's knowledge of psychology. The script would make even more sense if the writers were teenagers! Black Dragons has a similar build-up, I think, but with a real (though fantastic) explanation. Onward to The Corpse Vanishes, my last unwatched Lugosi poverty row, for now...
