Oct 26 07 3:22 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Return, if you've seen the Diamond Entertainment of APE MAN, would you say it stacks up to the Triton? I'm not going to upgrade to any other print, like I said in the HUMAN MONSTER thread, I've always found it passable...I mean, it's a complete print, not too beat-up...a bit washed out...but the sound is good. I still think there's a strange sadness imbued in the film, you sense that Lugosi is well into his "habit", at least I think that is the case...but in the sequences where he is required to handle the syringe...it's kind of tragic. All of a sudden I'm imagining his being an organ grinder's monkey, or it really adds a whole other level of meaning to having a monkey on one's back. His pantomiming of not being able to straighten up as the serum is wearing off is really superb...I mean, think about it...how the hell would one pull that off anyway? "Your brain is too feeble to concieve what I have accomplished!!"

Oct 26 07 6:27 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	{Return, if you've seen the Diamond Entertainment of APE MAN, would you say it stacks up to the Triton?} That's one of the only versions I don't have, but of all the VHS and DVD versions I've seen over the years, nothing even comes close to the Triton/Slingshot disc. That's not to say it's perfect, the image is a bit soft, too much crammed on one disc maybe. I've always hoped Roan would do this one. It, along with SPOOKS RUN WILD, are the only PD Lugosi Monogram's they haven't done for some reason.

Oct 26 07 2:43 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Thanks Return, might give the Triton a try...Ya know...I've got some sketches of what I'd consider the ideal re-packaging of the Monogram 9...it would have the feel of an old 78rpm album, with those pulpy paper record holders, and the discs would be faced with a nice thick detailed Monogram logo...but they would vary...the blue logo, the red...and so on. I mean they are PD afterall...couldn't we technically put together a CHFB endorsed set of these films, or one could do so as a private endeavour. "Your brain is too feeble to concieve what I have accomplished!!"

That's a really nice idea (one I thought about before), but then I discovered that RETURN OF THE APE MAN and VOODOO MAN aren't public domain. Doesn't look as if they'll ever get a legitimate release either. But I suppose you could do the other seven.

All the versions that I am aware of have the Favorite Films title in the opening credits. I believe Ted Newsom had mentioned the existance of a 35mm print of this title but there was no mention of it being an original Monogram first run print or a reissue.

Oct 30 10 9:23 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Just watched for the very first time last week.. and I gotta say, the film is pretty far down there even for a Monogram. Much has already been said about the "twist" at the end where the weird stalker turns out to be the writer (I couldn't POSSIBLY have ruined that). I was irritated at the sequence where first the male reporter sneaks into the mansion, and then the female reporter does, and we follow them in slower-than-real time. They're not even looking for anything, just wandering around, culminated in a completely stupefying moment when the female reporter knocks the male reporter out. Why'd she do that? Even if she thought he was a "bad guy," he had no idea she was there either way. Totally feels like someone checked the film length and realized they needed to pad it out all of a sudden. Anyway. I kinda wished that it had been written so that the Wallace Ford reporter character was the same guy as was in THE MYSTERIOUS MR. WONG. "I live the unknown, I love the unknown... I AM the unknown."

It's a bit of a distant shot, hard to be certain.
