If you have no idea about the film other than commercials, then how can you have an opinion on it of that extreme? I would easily put it into the "one of the most enjoyable movies I have ever seen" category.

I would easily put it into the "one of the most enjoyable movies I have ever seen" category. When someone who has (and I know this for a fact from real conversation) never seen any of the classic Hollywood films and foreign films that I treasure proclaims a superhero movie from a couple years back the best film ever... Do I really have to go on? The accolade has a dubious foundation. I can respect you saying it's a good film. I can respect Wich2 saying it's a good film. And I respect you because I assume you have seen a gamut of films and bring standards besides "It's new and noisy" to the experience. I have a harder time accepting all people's opinion uncritically.

That's exactly how I've felt with regard to movies, but I now extend it even to "great" movies that I have no interest in. I've reached an age where I feel life's too short to watch all sorts of films just to get to one gem... or to watch "classic four star movies" if you don't happen to like the subject matter (say something like LAWRENCE OF ARABIA for me).

You never know, you might find something you like! Monsters got me into the world of cinema and i've learned to appreciate a wide span of cinema and have been very grateful. Even bad movies serve a purpose...they make us realize how GOOD the best movies really are!

The particular movie doesn't matter here, so let's just think it of it as an anonymous, generic title. But if I'd never seen a movie before and I found out that it was the movie that inspired the director of one of my all-time favorite movies to make films, I'd be interested in seeing that film. I'd be curious to see what there was about that movie that it would compel someone to take up filmmaking as their life's work. I'd want to see if I could find elements of that movie in the movie I already like. This is one way I've gone about making discoveries. If I see the work of someone in a film I like, or just like their contribution to the film, it leads me to seek out their other films. And that leads me to discover the work of yet others whose work I then want to seek out. Similarly, I become interested in what influences these people and when I learn of a film that is important to them, I want to see it. I think everyone does this to a certain degree, but it's a way of life with me in regards to film and has led me to many happy discoveries.
