Hey guys! I remember the colorized version of Mighty Joe that Monstrosity referred to (it was also released by Turner, as was a colorized version of the 1933 King Kong back in the late 80's/early 90's) I never actually saw it, but I was more than content with the restored tape (with the tinted orphanage sequence) that Ape has pictured in the prior post.

Bob, it WAS likely "dye."
I mean "die" in the tool and machining world sense of the word, not dye in terms of applying color. (Which is how Harryhausen explained it.) According to Ray H., there was a two-part film "die," (or mask): one part to block out the red (or orange) for the yellow sections, and an opposite but corresponding part to block out the yellow sections for the red (or orange).

I've only ever been really interested in ONE giant ape movie, just as I've only ever been really interested in ONE shark movie.
