I remember often flipping between The Ghoul and another hosted horror show. My memory's fuzzy, but I always assumed it was Bob. Oh great...now I'm going to have to do some actual research...

I read an article on BOB WILKINS in SCOTT MOON's PLANET X MAGAZINE, back in 1995 and it was mentioned that THE GHOUL came in about 1972. CREATURE FEATURES started on JANUARY 9, 1971 on KTVU TV Channel 2, and ASMODEOUS went off the air in April of the same year. Plus THE GHOUL was on FRIDAY NIGHTS while the other 2 were on SATURDAY NIGHTS. I think ASMODEOUS did compete with THE GLOB however as I am almost sure that was on SATURDAY NIGHTS. Gotta consult the old TV GUIDES to be sure. Those were the days, Sir Graves Ghastley, the Ghoul and I believe it was Chiller, we got to see some awesome movies and horror hosts. I met the Ghoul or Ron a couple of years ago. He was at the Motor City Con. BK

He was always even bigger there than he was in Cleveland, at times regularly beating a portion on THE TONIGHT SHOW with Johnny Carson (can't recall if it was the first 20 minutes or last 20 minutes of Johnny) In turn, Sir Graves Ghastly tried breaking into the Cleveland market as Count Alucard on WUAB Ch 43. Alucard was a slightly spookie version of Sir Graves. That show didn't last, though.

Aug 15 08 11:45 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hey Guys, great info, great stuff. Count Alucard was on WUAB43Cleveland at 11:30PM-1:30AM during the early 70's. I remember watching The Brain Eaters on one of his shows. I don't remember the Count being on Tv for any length of time. I think he was a victim of the ratings war between Big Chuck & Li John and The Ghoul.

Somehow I can't see it happening with 4 INDEPENDENT VHF TV STATIONS, you would think almost ALL of the HORROR/SCIENCE FICTION would be taken by them (as well as KABC-7 for their 3:30 Movie) and wouldn't be anything left for THE GHOUL to show on CHANNEL 52. Am I Wrong? If so, What monster movies were shown on THE GHOUL's LOS ANGELES Show?

When he publicly insulted his predecessor, the legendary Svengoolie, public outcry was so great that he was promptly pulled from the Chicago airwaves! "If you had a face like mine, you'd punch me right in the nose, and I'm just the fella that can do it!"

And Alu Card wasn't really scary. I remember one time when he offered viewers a promotional photo. He said (in his heavy Lugosi imitation) "I bet you wonder how i take photo when vampires don't photograph! I take it when I not looking. I don't know how I do it, but I do." It was that kind of material. Alu Card also had an ongoing feud with Sir Graves, which Graves usually came out on top of. Alu Card didn't last long. Sir Graves ran a bit longer, but no more than two years in the Cleveland market. (However comercials featuring him ran for years afterward) Lawson Deeming was truly a superior talent. Though I remembered Alu Card, it never struck me that the same actor played both parts until I read it years later.

Sep 17 08 10:39 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have fond memories of The Ghoul. He had a sarcastic wit, a deep fondness for his fans, and a never ending supply of firecrackers and Cheez Wiz. I remember The Ghoul drenching Froggy in a sea of the oily cheese substitute on many shows. On another occasion, The Ghoul built a model of Gamera(the Monster With The Jet Rockets In His Back Pockets), stuffed it full of M-80s and sent it sailing across the studios without the model exploding. He also did skits between the commercials, such as Spencer & Mongolia, The Little Rasghouls and Ghoulombo. One Christmas The Ghoul dressed up in a ratty looking Santa Claus outfit and at the beginning and end of the show rode into the studio on a cheezy looking sleigh pulled by one of his crew dressed in a moth eaten reindeer costume. It was the funniest thing to see. At the end of each show The Ghoul would say that there was just enough time fror a drink and then home to his wife, Queen Barbara. I had the chance to meet The Ghoul at Ghoulardifest 1998 in Cleveland and he was warm and gracious and funny. One of my prize possessions is a pink flamingo lawn ornament with his autograph. It sits in my library next to my Side Show Toys Universal figures. Somehow it just seems appropriate.

Sep 18 08 12:18 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I sent a few models into The Ghoul during his last run in Cleveland. My heart swelled with genuine pride when he blew the living crap out of them. The Gamera prop was actually provided by a fan. According to fellow Cleveland host, Big Chuck Schodowski, at least one such fan got in touch to tell him he'd gone on to a career in public firework events. My favorite blow-up is still the watermelon. I was in Cleveland around the 4th of July in 2003 and attended a taping of the show. The Ghoul shoved what looked like a half stick of dynamite into said melon, which proceeded to evaporate into a fruity-cordite mist. The cincussion from the explosion set off car alarms across the neighborhood and pieces of rind flew past my head about a block away. You're definitely right about The Ghoul and his fans. Although he can be extremely prickly behind the scenes, he's always been exceptionally warm to his fans.

Jul 7 12 7:23 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Superhost featured an hour of Three Stooges from Saturdays noon to 1, followed by a double feature of horror/sci fi until 4:00 (he began in 1969 on channel 43, and lasted 20 years). When I taped ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET THE INVISIBLE MAN in 1985, I found the 82 minute movie chopped down to 66 minutes, so avoided any films longer than a one hour Universal 'B.' In the tradition of Ghoulardi, The Ghoul, and Big Chuck, Supe had his set adorned with artwork from young viewers, depicting the various titles that aired regularly week after week. THE GHOUL'S NIGHTMARE MOVIE aired Saturday nights at 11:00 on channel 61, but I don't recollect any specific titles. Ron Sweed worked as a kind of gofer for Ernie Anderson, and is chiefly remembered by Big Chuck fans as the gorilla in their outrageous skit for the 1969 Ray Stevens hit "Gitarzan." As far as I know, Ernie gave Ron his blessing to carry on in similar fashion, and The Ghoul has lasted for 40 years. Last time I saw him, it was in 1999 on Akron's channel 55, Sunday nights at midnight, still showing titles that were relatively new when Ghoulardi first aired them. To this day, Big Chuck credits Ernie Anderson for building up the cult around THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, although Ernie quit by December 1966.

I grew up in Upper Michigan and when we got cable (finally) around 1971-72, we got WKBD Detroit and The Ghoul! What a show. I remember the movies quite well--Frankenstein 1970, Fiend without a Face, Godzilla, Attack of the Crab Monsters etc.--and I'll never forget him blowing up things and tormenting Froggy. Some people say he was just a Ghoulardi clone but nothing could be farther from the truth. The Ghoul had his own thing going. Great rock music, weird polka, pink flamingos, firecrackers. He sat on a toilet (the throne) and held court with a toilet plunger. I remember fighting to stay awake during really bad movies like War of the Satellites and Creature from the Haunted Sea just to see the crazy skits during the commercial break: Strange People, Strange lands; Night Ghoulery, the Little Rasghouls, the Galloping Ghoulmet, Chef Curdle. I'll never forget the cooking bits (Frogleg Surprise) and blowing up pumpkins on Halloween. Every kid in my neighborhood was obsessed with The Ghoul. One Halloween no less than eight of us went as The Ghoul. We were a Ghoul gang. I also ordered one of those Ghoul Power kits. It came with a Ghoul Power bumper sticker and T-shirt, a few other things. Great stuff. So, yeah, I definitely remember The Ghoul, my King and Leader. Stay sick...turn blue...scratch glass...climb walls...but don't get caught!
