No New Universal Genre Titles on DVD This Fall |
Lead | |
|
Talked to the rep at Universal about the possibility of more classic horror or sci-fi sets this year, and it doesn't look good. He mentioned the titles we
know about (The Mummy SE, Man of a Thousand Faces, the recently released Classic Ultimate Sci-Fi 1 & 2 set and MST3000
movie), and said there could be more Night Gallery and Hitchcock in the future but nothing in the works (and that Thriller sounded
interesting, but nothing planned as of now). They're already working on their 2009 schedule, and there's no exclusive Best Buy sets in the works for
the year, or any other genre releases. The worst comment was that in today's market it's becoming more and more difficult to release classic films on
DVDs and make a profit, especially on lesser known titles. My take, don't hold your breath for anymore of the classics from the horror vault anytime soon.
They still have my list of requested titles, and they'll keep them in mind for the future. Also, no mention of upcoming BD of any of the classics (even
though I asked the question). It looks like this fall will belong to Sony and Warner when it comes to classic horror on DVD.

Disappointing news.

An instinct I've been feeling lately is to pick up any genre DVDs I've been fence-sitting on while they're still on the shelves.

Looks like it's time to search for some used VHS tapes.

I think it's safe to say that this fall will be it for classic genre releases. And really for 31-48 I would say only IOLS and the Uninvited remains must
see films. Assuming we get Walking Dead and Beast with Five Fingers.

in the last Karloff and Best Buy box.

to hunt down the VHS tapes.

Another reason for the companies to hurry up and make high quality downloads available for the classic films.

Again, my biggest worry with downloads is that companies will not only relegate obscure films to download-only, but that the slippery-slope will mean all
classic films get slagged off in download only form. From what I understand, downloads are also (thus far) under performing as well.
Downloads will no doubt consist of whatever state of prep studios deem necessary for TV syndication packages, so my guess is you're going to see some pretty indifferent treatments. |

What a pisser! I was REALLY hoping for a Paramount set. Maybe Universal would consider licensing out some of that material. (Imagine a Criterion ISLAND OF LOST
SOULS!)

physical stores, they can still sell them online. At least, that's my hope!

Yeah, sales of these old, worthless films that nobody wants must be terrible.
I mean, look at those Universal Sci-Fi / Best Buy sets. Nobody bough them. That's why they were just giving them away on eBay for over a hundred bucks a pop. That's also why Universal looked at the those sad sale figures and decided to re-release them everywhere so they could lose even more money. Nobody wants 'em! Cromwell |
