Columbia's remaining Toho titles...what's left? |

BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE, MOTHRA...do they also have REBIRTH OF MOTHRA III? (IMDB lists TriStar as the U.S. video distributor for this last film under Company
Credits, but I don't recall it ever having a home video release in the States.) Since Columbia/Sony has done two Icons of Horror sets (Boris
Karloff, Sam Katzman) and have an Icons of Adventure set (Hammer Films swashbucklers) on the way, it would be nice to see Toho given an Icons of Sci-Fi set.

H Man, too, I'm pretty sure. Seems I remember Mike Schelsinger (who posts here as "precode" and works for Sony) saying
Battle in Outer Space, Mothra and H Man are being prepped for a '09 release. Don't know about
Mothra III (though it ain't much good, anyway).
How about The Human Vapor and Secret of the Telelgian? Anybody know what studio owns those? |

It's funny you mention H MAN...while watching the "Women of Godzilla" featurette on the new TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA DVD, I suddenly realized
I've never seen it all the way through.
Speaking of who owns what...who currently owns GORATH? |

I think Gorath is MGM
Hmm - a Japanese Godzilla 2000 would be a good edition to an Icons set. Saves me buying the ludicrous expensive Japanese DVD Plus those Heisei Godzillas Sony released back in the late 90s |

The Toho fantasy films originally distributed by Brenco Pictures, THE HUMAN VAPOR, THE LAST WAR and GORATH, are with MGM now. Apparently, the elements are in
very poor shape. Too poor to consider a DVD release, reportedly. The rights to SECRET OF THE TELEGIAN (1960) must have reverted back to Toho quite some time
ago, since I'm not sure if Hertz-Lion still exists. I'd like to see a Ishiro Honda box with THE H-MAN, BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE and MOTHRA from
Columbia/TriStar. Yes, they also have MOTHRA 3, which seems to have its fans.
Then, there are the Toho films which were not widely distributed in the States (or just relegated to television): Motoyoshi Oda's THE INVISIBLE AVENGER (Tomei Ningen, 1954), Hiroshi Inagaki's THE THREE TREASURES (1959), Michio Yamamoto's THE VAMPIRE DOLL (1970), THE LAKE OF DRACULA (1971) and THE EVIL OF DRACULA (1973), Shiro Moritani's SUBMERSION OF JAPAN (1973), Toshio Masuda's PROPHECIES OF NOSTRADAMUS (aka CATASTROPHE: 1999, 1974), Jun Fukuda's ESPY (1973), etc.

There is a UK DVD of Lake Of Dracula - though i don't think its anamorphic
I'd love to see Propheices of Nostradamus. I thought it was under a Toho ban though? |

THE LAKE OF DRACULA (1971) and THE EVIL OF DRACULA (1973),I've got both of those but, alas, EP mode VHS, pan & scan from Paramount. THE HUMAN VAPOR, THE LAST WAR and GORATH, are with MGM now. Apparently, the elements are in very poor shape. Too poor to consider a DVD release, reportedly.Sad news. I've only seen GORATH via VHS...the American cut, with no giant walrus in sight. |

There are gorgeous Japanese versions of these films available. Do the English audiotracks survive in good enough condition that they could be synched to the
Japanese versions, or does this raise a host of licensing, copyright, and logistical nightmares?

MGM looked into getting materials on its Toho titles once or twice, but ran into problems establishing their chain of title; leter, after Toho revealed the costs they would charge for new film elements, the project was deemed too expensive. So a release of the MGM Tohos, unfortunately, does not look likely in the foreseeable future. If I recall correctly, Mike said he was hoping to get the Columbia Tohos on the '09 schedule; I don't think it's an absolute certainty that they're coming, but Mike would know far better than I. |

There was some additional footage added to the prologue of GORATH and some optical rain over the flooding of Tokyo. The HUMAN VAPOR also has some footage
(scenes of Tokyo) not in the Japanese version. It's been so long since I have seen the US version of THE LAST WAR, I can't comment on it.

Since the original Japanese-language versions of sci-fi/monster films are now being released in tandem with the American versions, could a U. S. company just
release a subtitled version of the Japanese version? I can think of two things that might affect that: 1) I don't know if Toho would only license
"their" version as a standalone, or if they did, might they charge more? 2) How many fewer sales would a U. S. company make if the dubbed-version
wasn't included on the DVD? I know many people on this board would probably be satisfied with having only the original version, but I don't know how
many "lost" sales there'd be due to others who want to see the butchered versions they grew up loving...

Media Blasters released Varan as a subbed only release....
Must have done OK cause they kept releasing further Tohos...

Same with THE MYSTERIANS (RKO/MGM), DOGORA (AIP-TV), ATRAGON (AIP), MATANGO (AIP-TV), LATITUDE ZERO (National General Pictures/Gold Key Entertainment), SPACE
AMOEBA (AIP) and FRANKENSTEIN CONQUERS THE WORLD (AIP). So, I assume that someone could license the Japanese versions and release them with English subtitles
(of course) and any alternate dubbing, if any, originally commissioned by Toho.

Classic Media passed on LAKE, EVIL, ESPY, LAST DAYS OF PLANET EARTH and FRANKENSTEIN CONQUERS THE WORLD. The rights to these titles reverted back to Toho.
Media Blasters snapped up the DVD rights to FRANKENSTEIN.
