The 'SON' finished models [assuming there are two] are a lot more alike than the two distinctively different KONG puppets of the original movie......I know that some reports state that up to six different ape models were used in KONG, but I've only ever noticed two......possibly six were used on 'Mighty Joe', but there are so many conflicting reports....... Nov 9 09 4:34 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think the confusion with Kong is that there were only 2 armatures, but many times he was re-skinned/fixed/re-sculpted, so people get confused. However, I am still in the camp that says there was a 24 inch armature, like the one just auctioned off, which would make 3 armatures. Kess

I still think there were only two 18" Kong armatures because that's what Marcel Delgado told me. I hope that the Kong armature that is currently being auctioned gets to meet Bob Burns' Kong armature so we have a chance to see the two of them together. That will tell us the story. Is one for just in case the other broke during a filming scene, or do you think maybe they had 2 different scenes with FS hands being filmed at once? I don't seem to recall anyone having interaction with a full sized hand besides Fay, wasn't the Driscoll in the cave with a miniature hand? Kess

Unless they needed a right hand and a left hand I can't think of a good reason to have two of them. Guess I'll have to watch the movie again. best wishes, Jim Aupperle

A great piece of RKO history there, Jim.....the final tally seems quite a bargain considering just how complex these armatures were, on the other hand, 17 hundred dollars would be a lot of dough in the depths of the Depression. PS: I just noticed that the above receipt is dated April '33, and the first 'KONG' film was released around Easter that year. Seeing 'SON' came out at Christmas the same year, it seems to indicate that RKO launched straight into a sequel as quickly as possible. For a 'quickie', 'SON'isn't at all bad: I think that the first movie had a full 55 weeks of SPFX/animation work, discounting the live-action set-ups. 'the horror..............THE HORROR!' Nov 10 09 3:06 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	here's more screencapture shots from 'SON':I quite like the scenes of the destruction of Skull Island, apart from the falling boulders that are too obviously superimposed by animation: must admit, though, these long-shots at the end are unusual and effective: I assume this is a Dunning traveling matte shot. Brilliantly atmospheric. As Bob pointed out earlier, it must have been quite a task to effictively shoot the close-ups of the fully-articulated KONG hand when a lot of it was submerged in water: that was a masterfully-done physical-effects shot in my view. above: some great rear-projection compositions in SON. Nov 21 09 11:56 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	What's interesting about The Son of Kong is how much full size rear screen projection is used. This movie was ahead of George Lucas and his green screen/artificial sets filmmaking by several decades. It seems like for the island they only built one rock wall and part of the jungle as far a actual sets are concerned, and the rest of the time the actors play in front of a rear projected image.

Nov 22 09 9:07 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	This week's TIMES in the UK carried an article which suggests there may have been a third KONG armature, custom-built for the great Ape's climatic climb of the Empire State: whether the story here is true is anyone's guess, and I tend to agree there were only two main KONG armatures created: but who knows?
