Apr 30 08 9:58 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Okay, here's how it goes. First of all, this is NOT a competition. It is a fun way to share our artwork and challenge our individual skills. Once a month (or so, depending on how this goes) a classic horror character or actor will be named as the "Subject Of The Month." Since I started this, I'll name the first subject, and then take suggestions for the following months. The drawing can be old or new, but it would be much more fun if they were all new. The drawing can be any medium - pencil, ink, watercolor, acrylics, oils, pastels, crayons, markers, blood...(no, wait...not blood) or whatever. The drawing can be a finished, refined piece or as simple as a doodle on a bev-map. There is no obligation to contribute from month to month. But do try, the more folks who contribute, the more fun it will be. To start off, the first official "Subject Of The Month" is: BELA LUGOSI as a VAMPIRE It can be Count Dracula, Armand Tesla, Mark Of The Vampire vampire, Old Mother Riley vampire, etc. Have fun and GO FOR IT! May 1 08 8:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'll take some of that action...! Here's a "comp" I did in preparation for a finished piece (to decide on colors, etc.). I actually, in some ways, like this better than the final painting. It has a looseness and impressionistic quality that I wanted to get into the finished illustration. Unfortunately, I chickened out for the final, and went much more conservative. The finished painting was sold, but I've held on to the comp, lo these many years. The scan doesn't do it justice (IMO). I put a nice gloss medium finish on it that really gives it depth, but the scanning just flattens that all out (I know - us picky artists!). May 1 08 9:43 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	There is something very appealing about "rough drafts" of paintings. Jim, that impressionistic quality you mentioned really shines through...but having said that, the final painting is quite striking. The colors are a bit cooler in the final, which really changes the mood, doesn't it? That, and the addition of the mist in the background, the painting actually creates a chill in the air. Very, very nice. I'd love to see a larger version. I can swear I've seen this piece before. Have you posted it in the other folder? Or do I maybe know the owner! Well, here's my entry, fresh off the drawing table... I think this is the first time I've done Bela as Tesla from RETURN OF THE VAMPIRE. And Frank, not only is your characterization dead on (no pun intended ), but I love your graphic handing of the details: the bow tie, the lapel rose, the circle motif. I tried a little bit of that in my "monster montage" for "Wonder" magazine, but you're better at it! Here's a detail of my Bela from the "Wonder" magazine cover: And Mike - that's my favorite piece of yours that I've seen. The anguished, yet desirous, look you've captured (and emphasized) on Helen Chandler's face is something a mere computer-colorized version of that still could never achieve. Exxxcellent, Mr. Mike... exxxxcellent!!

I work with acrylic inks wich is very similar to watercolor, I like my medium more fluid, don't care much for oils or acrylics, I suppose I enjoy working with colored water! love your Bela and helen chandler, mike! One color combination I never get tired with is red and blue. I'd love to see the complete WONDER piece frank! you really are a master of the black and white art! here's my CHFB MONSTER CHALLENGE exclusive Lugosi. I tried a different approach, instead of the usual big face portrait I wanted an iconic image of Bela and included his trademark tux and menacing hands. My suggestion for next month challenge... THE GILL MAN ! (but I wanna see more Belas from fellow members!)

Jim, could you post the entire "Wonder" piece? Was it ever produced as a tee-shirt? Here's a couple of older Bela pieces. I love your idea!but I think the shadow gag would work better in your style ! the oil piece is amazing ! very classy, I can imagine it in a nice gothic frame. I would love to go to a convention, everyone tells me that I could do some good bussines and meet great people. this thread is great! it would make a great book!
