OK, I'm sure this is a pretty basic question, but I don't understand how certain things become public domain. I understand films, that's easy
enough, but why do certain TV shows have PD episodes and others don't? For example, there are PD episodes of The Andy
Griffith Show and Bonanza, but not Star Trek or I Love Lucy. Is it that each and every episode must be registered individually, and some just fell through the cracks? Is it
possible that Star Trek could have had a PD episode, but the studio happened to catch them all?
I've been buying some PD collections of films and television series, and I'm amazed at the incredible number of titles that exist. Back in the days of VHS I thought it was a relatively small number, but now with cheap DVD production it looks like more and more titles keep becoming unearthed.
Of course, if I see another PD collection of "Africa Screams" or "Disorder in the Court" I'll just scream.
