Apr 11 08 6:35 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	For anyone on the board who lived in the Los Angeles/Southern California area in the early 70s (or possibly late 60s): do you remember a Saturday afternoon horror show called Chiller? Chiller had no host, but is not to be confused with the East Coast's Chiller Theatre with the animated hand. Chiller in L.A. had just a weird backdrop/wall and an announcer's voice introducing horror films each weekend. I'm fairly certain it ran THE DISEMBODIED, and it also may have shown THE CRAWLING HAND, ATTACK OF THE MUSHROOM PEOPLE and THE HYPNOTIC EYE. I'm not sure, but I think it ran on one of the local independents, which would have been KTLA (Ch. 5), KHJ (Ch. 9), KTTV (Ch. 11) or KCOP (Ch. 13). The eerie wall and voice always got my attention and raised the hairs on the back of my neck, but my memories of the show are faint. It's not the same show as Fright Night with Seymour, who had his own "slimey wall." I saw Seymour many times and remember him fairly well. Chiller was definitely a different program. If it rings a bell with anyone, I'd be much obliged if you could post anything you recall about the years/time slot it ran; other films it aired; any details about the backdrop and voice; or which station it ran on. How about something in the early 70s called CREATURE FEATURE on Channel 11 KTTV. A man would walk out of a coffin and towards the camera. That's all I remember. I loved Seymour.

He would show INVADERS FROM MARS, and those Filipino John Ashley movies, etc. And the song with the lyrics, "Why can`t we be friends, why can`t we be friends" was his theme song. I`m not sure which LA station showed this.

Apr 12 08 12:58 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	How about The Channel 5 Movie Theater!! This was a Los Angeles, 70s thing. They would show "WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS" 5 NIGHTS A WEEK!!! Also they would show "KONGA" five nights a week, and many others. What a dream., Gargantua five nights a week!! Then after the movie they would have a show called "Second Look." The host would sit there and show a clip of the movie that was just on, and he would ask questions and they'd give a phone number and you could call and win! Very fun stuff.

I`m not sure which LA station showed this. That was "Famous Morris" on KCOP, channel 13. He wasn't a gangster, but supposedly a talent agent for movie monsters.

Apr 21 08 12:19 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I e-mailed a friend, asking about Chiller, and he remembered quite a few details. I'm still unsure about the time frame. He says it aired in the early 60s, but I would have been like 4 years old then, and I remember thinking Allison Hayes looked sexy in her voodoo dance scene in THE DISEMBODIED. My reasoning is that I would have had to have been at least 6-8 years old, which would place Chiller around '64 to '66 or later. I wouldn't have been gawking at women when I was 4, would I? Maybe I saw DISEMBODIED on TV years later and am confusing things. Anyway, here's what my friend remembers: Chiller was on in the early 60s. I don't know if it lasted all the way to the late 60s. It was on Channel 11, KTTV. The voice would say: "It's time for...CHILLER! In the coming weeks you'll see such disturbing motion pictures as...The Disembodied...Attack of the Crab Monsters...Monster from Piedras Blancas...Attack of the 50 Foot Woman...Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake...Four Sided Triangle...The Cosmic Man...Frankenstein's Daughter...Daughter of Dr. Jekyll..." Then it would show some scenes from the movie that was coming up for next week. They didn't show Attack of the Mushroom People. I think they ran all Allied Artists titles. I remember there was a clock (I think a grandfather's clock) ticking in the background with blood dripping down it. Of course it was B/W TV, but it was probably supposed to be blood. I used to watch it with my best friend on Sat. nights and loved it.

I've been searching for this tune for years. I remember enjoying movies like One Million Years BC, Five Million Years to Earth, The Shuttered Room, Monster Zero, Konga, Destroy All Planets, Voyage Into Space among others, five times a week! KTTV's Creature Features had an opening of little rubber skeletons in a torture chamber, chained to the wall, being wiggled from behind. Even as a kid, I thought this was funny. KTTV always had the really cheap 50s and 60s Allied Artists titles. The week long strip of "Gargantuas" and "Konga" on KTLA are forever etched in my mind. "Dr. Terror's House of Horrors" and "Horrors of the Black Museum" would show up, too. Remember KABC's 6:30 movie in the early 70s? They would show "The Time Machine," "The Incredible Mr.Limpet," "The Fly," "Frankenstein Conquers the World," "King Kong vs. Godzilla," plus others, sometimes in two parts, sometimes butchered. I remember as a kid thinking that these films on a network meant they were really good films, or that the network gave them prestige, although the Universals were always on KTLA, as I recall. I'm pretty happy that I've been able to find a lot of my old C5MT favorites available for sale. I know the intro tune was a real song because I heard it playing in a Tower Records in the 80s... From what I've seen, KABC's movie was only at 6:30 between 1971 and 1974 (prior to that, it had been at 6:00, then the Prime Time Access Rule kicked in), then in '74 the movie switched times with the station's news block and began at 3:30 until its 1980 cancellation.

Here goes ... "I, too, remember this version of the 'CHILLER' opening more than any other which may have preceded or followed it: Mid-60s and in chilling black and white! "In addition to the word 'Chiller' dripping blood-like down the screen in pure white, there included ( at least in the Los Angeles area ): 1) The sound of a pendulum clock ticking; 2) A visual of that pendulum in motion; 3) A human skull slowly emerging from a watery liquid ( acid ...? ) which appeared quite black on the screen; and, of course, 4) That creepy music ... "Everywhere I search for this I am confronted with the later ( color ) version with the hand emerging from the earth ... if anyone out there knows where I can find this mid-60's black and white version, please let me know ... On a different note, remember Fright Night with Seymour on KHJ with the slimy wall? I swear the 80's movie "Fright Night" was somewhat modeled after him.
