Surprising, in a way, that they'd go this far for something that's PD, but also very respectful of them to do this for George. Guess they want to make the money back on him and DIARY... Duane Jones' Final Audio Interview Audio Commentaries "One For The Fire - The Legacy of Night of the Living Dead" - An all-new ninety-minute documentary on the making and enduring appeal of the film featuring cast & crew interviews Restored all-new 4x3 1080p HD transfer (curious, will this turn into one of those s**t polishing things, I wonder...) Oh, and here's the specs for DIARY OF THE DEAD, which I missed in theaters but still really would like to see, regardless of so many neg comments. Audio Commentary with George A. Romero, Director of Photography Adam Swica, and Editor Michael Doherty "For The Record: The Making of Diary of the Dead" - A ninety-minute, five-part look into the creation of the film including interviews with the cast & crew. "Character Confessionals" - A series of "in-character" confessionals from the cast that were not seen in the final film "Familiar Voices "- A look at some of the original recording sessions of three of the famous voices used in the background of the film. (04/02/08 2:28 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	I wonder if a good chunk of the new DVD is just a direct port of Elite's "Millenium Edition" of NOTLD, albeit perhaps with a new transfer of the movie itself. It does appear they may be trying to recopyright the whole darned thing - an upcoming 40th anniversary screening in L.A. is being credited to Weinstein.

(04/02/08 3:01 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	Restored all-new 4x3 1080p HD transfer Weinstein has yet to announce the switch from the now defunct HD DVD to Blu-ray, but I can't see any particular reason for doing a HD 1080p transfer than also having a Blu-ray in the works. consider me first in line.

But remember, Romero approved the colorization of NOTLD, saying that he would have shot it in color if he had the money. He probably woudn't mind reconfiguring it for a 16x9 aspect ratio, either. I know the only 35mm print I've seen was incorrectly matted to the degree that everyones head kept bumping the top of the frame.

(04/02/08 12:28 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	After the Elite laserdisc came out, I seem to recall Don May or someone say that they tried matting the film at a couple different aspect ratios, but it always resulted in awkward cropping, so they kept it at 1.33:1. I can't see any particular reason for doing a HD 1080p transfer than also having a Blu-ray in the works. Doing transfers in HD is standard these days for the big studios; there are probably a couple thousand HD transfers in studio vaults you won't be seeing on Blu-Ray anytime soon. They do it to get the best possible quality, plus servicing HD cable/satellite stations and having HD ready if and when they want to release them on Blu-Ray at some point in the future, even if nothing is planned right now. Still, I imagine there's a good chance we'll be seeing a Blu-Ray release of NIGHT before the end of the year.

(04/02/08 10:48 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	Hmm... a 1968 production shot in 35mm. No way those viewfinders could have been marked for 1.85! Bob is right. In order for a theater to run Academy ratio, they need the plates and a shorter lens (since most screens are bare, full height). Presenting an image with a 1.85 lens would cause the full-frame image to spill off the screen. I suppose you could remove your prime lens from your scope lens, but that is a lot of work, particularly since these films would have been composed for their wide lenses anyway! I've had the honor of running NOTLD a number of times and I was in attendance when it was run at the Lafayette Theater a couple of years ago. Like me, they ran it 1.85:1 that IS the ratio-- no heads being cut off and all important information in the same area. I guess it's just another instance of us projectionists knowing the magic spell to make it look right! What IS irksome is that this is a HD transfer, so in other words, it IS going to be seen on sets with wide screens. And now, it will be presented with wasted resolution when it could have filled the whole screen. Romero is still alive. I would love to pose the question to him. J. I think the Weinsteins are trying to maximize their returns in giving ol' George some money last year for DIARY. And, of course, they can act like they're doing it out of respect for him...much like a tax write-off for a donation...

(04/03/08 8:20 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	The opening reel on the Elite DVD matches in terms of aspect ratio many of the older DVDs. MAtting that crops the image badly. HOWEVER, after the first reel, the picture becomes much more generously framed and can be matted fine. My opinion: it mostly likely was designed for widescreen but the extra space is for once well used!

(04/03/08 10:49 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	I've seen NOTLD open-matte so many times that the one time I did see it matted doesn't stick in my mind. However, just because I got used to open-matte presentations doesn't mean it's the best way to go, and I agree with Tservo4 that it would then benefit from the extra resolution an anamorphic transfer would have provided. I gotta say however that it's my hunch Romero endorses the full-screen, there really would be no other reason for Wienstein to go that way, since the rule of thumb these days is to go anamorphic wherever possible. To have done so would have distinguished it from the other releases, and possibly boosted sales for such a widely available title.

The film is presented in 4x3 because that's what Romero wants. Romero specifically wants NIGHT to be presented in 4x3 because that is his preferred vision. I was speaking with the folks who are releasing this new HD version not long ago and Romero was on the other end of the phone. I specifically ASKED him what ratio NIGHT should be in because whatever he wishes is what it should be. I, too, had questioned the 1.33:1 ratio, but that's exactly what he wants. He said, and I QUOTE... "NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD should be 1.33. That's the way I want it." So, there you have it... Director wants it that way. Director gets it that way. The transfer is indeed an all new one, but I'm not sure when it was done. It is much cleaner, with no hideous chroma noise and digital noise reduction that is present on the Elite releases (yeah, yeah... but the NOTLD Elite transfer was done for LaserDisc... the DVD compression really kinda hurts it).
