Monster Parade Magazine |

Well, I haven't seen any discussion of that 1950s pulpy relic--FM's very first American monstermag competitor. Until the advent of Ebay, Monster
Parades were damn scarce-Steve Dolnick, in the 1980s, was the guy (through his monster magazine back issue business) who almost single-handedly brought this
rare title to the attention of the monstermag collectors that weren't as yet aware of its existence. Monster Parade's first cover was awesome: a
color photo of a busty sexy blonde (actress Arlene Dahl) smiling in her low cut top (which revealed ALMOST all of her bossom), unaware of the ghoul lurking
behind her left shoulder. Great cover art/collage. MP's second issue was pretty terrific, too.: A painting of a generic movie werewolf clutching a
frightened damsel, against a pinkish-purple backgound--the cover had the visual impact of a 1940s horror movie poster. Collectors familiar with Monster Parade
will remember that the magazine lasted only 4 numbers, and its contents was a mixture of movie monster-articles and horror fiction with an erotic slant. And,
again, NICE copies of issues # 1 and # 2 are exceedingly difficult to come by-- due probably in large part to the soft cheap paper the mag was printed on.
OK...I'm done..

I have never seen one in person but there are a few copies in ebay stores right now.
There is a copy of issue#1 for BIN of $139.95 . In the price guide I have it list's #1 in GD condition at $250.00 ,vg-fine $ 400.00, and vf -nm at $500.00-$600.00. And my price guide is from 1995 I might have to sell a few things , that sounds like a pretty good price compared to the price guide. There are a few copies of #4 and a #3 also listed , one #4 is cgc graded 5.5 BIN $345.00.
I bid you Welcome!!!

Yeah I noticed that after I posted my comment, but it's still not that bad of a price for that #1 even in the shapes it's in in my non-professional
opinion.
I bid you Welcome!!!

I always liked Monster Parade.....the issue w/ the Wolf Man cover is great, but
it's still a bit of a pulp magazine throw back to me. My favourite FM rip-off has always been World Famous Creatures.....what you read about this magazine is absolutely true......it was printed with outrageous amounts of black ink.....to this day copies still bleed ink onto your fingers as you flip through them. Good Times!!! John |

Yeah, I've had it for a few years now. I'm pretty sure Steve Dolnick tracked it down for me.

I've never bothered to add Monster Parade or it's sister publication, Monsters and Things to my magazine collection, for exactly the reason that
pulpmonster stated. It leans more towards horror fiction than it does monster movies, ala Famous Monsters or Castle of Frankenstein. I had an issue or two of
each, but then I sold them on ebay.

carl2000 wrote: Right. But Since both titles DID have a number of movie monster articles in their respective issues, AND the fact that they were one of the few 1950s monster mag titles (coming out a few months after FM# 1), I always considered them an important component of my otherwise very incomplete monstermag ghoullection. But yes, I also feel the same way about some other monster mag tiles: Monster Mania, Modern Monsters, and Shriek never did a thing for me, coming out in the '65-66 timeframe--so I don't own any copies today (though when they all ORIGINALLY appeared on the stands, of course I bought them). |
