I am seeing two different releases of SHE on DVD that contain both the b/w and color versions linked to Legend and Harryhausen. One is released by Genius Products (released 11/28/2006) and the other by KINO (released 8/21/2007) as a delux set. Why two releases of the same film one year apart and both linked to Legend? Which is better or are they exactly the same quality? Eric

Mar 28 08 8:12 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Legend jumped the gun by releasing what they THOUGHT was a p.d. film. So Kino came in and did their own reissue. They also took what Legend called the "deleted scenes" and restored them to where they belonged in the feature. The scenes were not deleted from the original release. The film was trimmed for the 1949 double feature reissue. This footage is from a 16mm print provided by yours truly, copied long ago from a 35mm nitrate in Denmark. Nobody knows the whereabouts of that print or a complete 35mm copy. Warners has only a few reels in nitrate neg. Classic Film Scores Restored on CD http://www.chelsearialtostudios.com

They claim to be a leader in film preservation (although their ratty-looking DVD double feature of KILLER SHREWS/GIANT GILA MONSTER calls that into question), yet their versions of BEYOND TOMORROW (released as BEYOND CHRISTMAS by Fox) and SHE include deleted footage as a bonus feature, rather than acutally "restoring" it back into the film. (Even my PD copy of BEYOND TOMORROW had the missing footage actually in the film.)

I do have to give them credit on their version of THE GREAT RUPERT (released by Fox as A CHRISTMAS WISH) for including a commentary track by Terry Moore. (Too bad Image couldn't have scored that for their DVD.)

I recommend the new Kino release, which has the footage restored, is an improved transfer generally, and has some extras. (It also had the Legend colorized version on it, but you can avoid that!)

I am glad that Legend is doing this for us with PD titles. And I did buy a Legend copy of "Devil Bat". Also, didn't you loan it for the Lumivision release? I know you didn't for the Lugosi or Roan releases? Sorry, I know that is a touchy subject with you. Just that I would have hoped you could loan more to them! The market is still soft so as far as I know the only new project coming from Legend is the Howard Hughes western "The Outlaw". Too bad as I would love to see more horror and sci-fi offerings. Like versions of "Night of the Blood Beast", "Unknown World", "The Vampire Bat", "Killers from Outer Space", and even other titles like "Jack London" and Corman's "Fast and the Furious". Someone is not happy with Legend's "The Killer Shrews" and I have seen by others that it is the best out there. I have the Alpha version for years had been claimed as being the best and watching it on a HD set makes me wonder why I also thought so? I am thinking about switching it for the Legend copy. Can someone comment on how it compares with other offerings? As for "Giant Gila Monster" I am still happy with my Image version but is Legend's better? Most versions I see are open matte and wonder if Image simply added a mask to simulate widescreen? Besides an OAR, is there another that is sharper and cleaner?

But if the source print that Image obtained was the usual open matte print everyone else has and then added black bars on the top and bottom to "simulate" widescreen, is it "true" widescreen? It won't be anamorphic right?

Mar 28 09 11:41 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It is anamorphic. Add the black bars to a genuine open matte print and you have genuine widescreen. Add black bars to a zoomed in 4:3 video transfer - eg. Deadly Mantis - and you have a mess!
