Exactly. I'm beginning to think that with the exception of Lost in a Harem, that the portrait with human eyes gag was a cartoon and television gag. Scooby Doo in the first season had the gag, Andy Griffith, as you say, Gilligan's Island, I think, possibly the Monkees, and so on. But the gag appears to be definitely the product of a later era in Haunted House and mystery stories. I can sort of understand why the gag works better in a cartoon than it would live action. The cartoon can have the eyes very exaggerated to make the gag play well. It's just I thought finding this gag in earlier films was going to be a no-brainer. Little did I know. DK

That's one possibility. It would work better had Lost in a Harem that has the gag, not been made in 1944 and the story I'm writing takes place in early 1948. The other possibility is that Bud Abbott recognizes the picture from his film Lost in a Harem. Yes, I want to use the actual prop from the actual film, which is why it's so important to identify some actual film that has the gag. As it is, I have taken the mask from Genius at Work and have Bela recognize it after Bud Abbott notices eyes staring at them from it. I'd actually prefer a portrait, though, since it's over a fireplace mantle in the House of Doom. Best, DK

It's from that batch he did in 1934-36 for Lone Star that are collected on millions of cheap compilations. If it's not in RANDY, it's in one of them. Near the beginning, when Wayne has just arrived on the scene and is exploring an old house or something. I'm 95% sure, anyway.

The print I saw had an awful soundtrack though which made keeping up with the plot hard as it was tough making out dialogue. Its out on DVD from Roan and can be found for $7.50 at DVD Empire.
Just to clarify, is the print you saw with the poor soundtrack the Roan release?
