In GHOSTS ON THE LOOSE Bela does a variation on the bit, where he simply stands in a frame and pretends to be the portrait. When Sammy Morrison raises some dust portrait Bela sneezes with what sounds like "OH SH!T!".

Nope, I just screened Spooks Run Wild and although there are other gags including secret passages, disappearing cabinets and walking suits of armor, there are no portrait gags of any kind. However, I am now going to check Lost in a Harem. As I said, this gag seems to be a common cliche, but finding actual instances of a portrait with eyes cut out for someone to peer through are proving to be quite elusive. Best, DK

There is a big portrait of The Green Archer and it spies on other characters throughout the serial. There have to be dozens more---but that's the one that comes to mind at the moment.
Thank you, Captain. Indeed, there it is, as two lights in the eyes of the portrait, as seen in the trailer. That's one so far. Right now I'm checking Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase as a likely candidate. I was SOOOOOO hoping for a Bela Lugosi Monogram picture. This is just weird that the gag isn't as prevalent as you might think! Best, DK

I don't think we should rest until we come up with a dozen or two verifiable pre-1947 staring portrait pictures! Are we not men?
I'm looking at the Chans right now. Meeting at Midnight has a seance and such, but no portrait. I'll have to check out Castle in the Desert, but I think that just has a seance. I'm beginning to think this gag was more prevalent in the '60's on TV shows like The Monkees than classic films. Honestly, I would have thought SOME Universal picture would have had this bit. DK

And, oh yeah, as you may be able to tell, the guy playing all this peekaboo is, of course .... .... Bela Lugosi! Now it's not exactly a portrait with eyes per se, but the year is right, and with a little finessing, you may be able to adapt it to your needs. Thanks to ImageShack for Free Image Hosting
