The thinking on publishing photos way before the movie was they were afraid that some one would shoot a bad photo of the make up and put it on the net , as we were filming a lot of locations and someone already snuck some shots of Benny without make-up. So they figured that it would be better to put out some good shots of the make-up before bad ones surfaced.
I was hoping that someone would put the clips up an you tube so you guys could see it I think you would like it. The film looks very old school gothic horror movie which is why I like it. I just hope they keep it that way.

Interesting answer, Rick. Kind of a shame, a real sign of the times, that you have to worry about the danger of your work getting photographed without permission and then spread across the world via the internet.
Reminds me of when folks were trying to get photos of the mechanical sharks from JAWS prior to the release of the film, only in 1974 they didn't have the internet to worry about.
Different times we live in now.

Personally, I would have preferred not to have seen the beast until I saw the movie, but alas, too late (if you click on the photo link at the films website, bam, there's the Wolf Man right before your eyes. You don't even get a spoiler warning). Rick Baker, if you read this and care to comment, I wonder what your take is on that decision (to show the monster months before the film's release).

With all due respect to the make-up people, what's really going to sell this movie is the story. We have already been there and seen all varieties of Werewolf and WOLFMAN make-up and transformations ranging from the primitive "Werewolf of London" and "Wolfman" to the interesting "Howling" and "American Werewolf in London" to the cartoony CGI "Underworld" and "Van Helsing". I don't think that there's anything else out there that's new or different. I doubt that the pre release exclusive of a few pictures of make-up is going to make or break any Werewolf movie.

That's what I thought. I think he has the facial features of Lon Chaney Jr, and the hair of Oliver Reed. And even as the actual wolf man, his outfit resembles Reed's, while his make-up looks like a meaner, wilder version of Chaney's. It looks like we're getting the best of both worlds!

It is very old school gothic horror. There are nods to the Universal films as well as the Hammer. There is even one to the Aurora kit.
