Nominations for 2008 Rondo Awards |
Lead | |
|
We're already a fourth of the way into 2008. Time to start compiling! Please put the nominee and the category in the title; it makes it a lot easier to
find down the road!

Best Film: Cloverfield
|
Cloverfield, of course, remains to be seen whether it is the Best Film, but I found it suprisingly effective. Kudos to JJ Abrams and co.
I'd also like to nominate a new category: Best Hi-Def/Blu-ray release.

Hall of Fame Count Gore | ||
|
After a great run on commercial TV, Count Gore changed the whole playing field for horror hosts by having the first successful regular web show.
So I believe he's worthy not only from a life time achievement perspective, but also for establishing something new. Gravely |

In another Rondo thread, Friend of Daniel suggested WILLIAM GAINES and EC Comics for inclusion in the Monster Kid Hall of Fame,
and I piped in to suggest pairing Gaines with EC comics creator/editor/writer/artist AL FELDSTEIN, who's still alive to appreciate the honor. I'm not sure about Feldstein, but I know that Bill Gaines has been nominated in previous years -- let's give these guys their overdue tadoo this time. p.s. I second Gravely's nomination of COUNT GORE DE VOL for the Hall of Fame -- the very talented Dick Dyszel was a long-running TV horror host of the old ghoul school (in Kentucky and Washington DC), and he is also a visionary cyberspace pioneer whose "Creature Feature: the Weekly Web Program" (est. 1998) was the first hosted horror show on the Internet. AND his original "Horror Host mailing list" (now the "Fans of Horror Hosts" Yahoo group) was the inspiration, gathering place and breeding ground for the Horror Host Underground movement, providing information, moral support, positive feedback, constructive criticism, ideas and encouragement for the new generation of horror hosts currently spreading like wildfear (weirdfire?) on cable access channels, websites, blogs and video portals all over the country and around the Web.

KarloffLives wrote: That said if David can even consider new categories I think splitting best website into best website and best blog is a priority. Looking at the number of nominees and quality of this years group this would be the logical choice. Like books and magazines are both print media, they are both completely different entities. I believe it rings true for electronic media too. The obstacles are more categories means longer ballots, slower counting and higher expenses in Rondo award production. If these can be addressed then
perhaps David would be willing to entertain new categories I hope.

Best Website - Count Gore
|
I'd like to nominate Count Gore's Weekly Web Program for Best Website.
I know a separate category was added for Horror Hosts, but Gore's site is a weekly updated site, with fresh content added every Sat. Plus add to that the chat room, video content, and all the contributions from various hosts and writers and I think it more than qualifies in that category. He probably updates more often than most sites on that list. But I can also understand the hesitancy to add him, as several horror hosts host movies on the web, and if you add one... This is one of the toughest categories on the ballot for me - some of my favorite sites are on that list, such as Egor's Chamber of Horror Hosts (which I really hope wins one of these years), horrorhosts.com, Universal Monster Army, Video Watchblog, The Many Faces of the Frankenstein Monster and many, many other great sites - it's just a terrific list. The idea to split the category into websites and blogs is a good one - but like others have mentioned, it costs money to produce those statues. Again, maybe it is time the Rondos started charging winners to have statues made, then the possibility of adding more categories would be easier to do. Just a thought. David, Gary - is that something you've considered? |

I know that if I were ever to be graced with the opportunity to put a Rondo on my shelf I'd be willing to shell out for the cost of producing the bust. I
think it's an excellent idea. But I can understand the apprehension associated with taking such a step.

BEST DVD EXTRA: THE MIST IN BLACK & WHITE
The Mist is reconfigured into a high-contrast Black & White version on the second disc of The Mist 2 disc set. A loving tribute to classic horror films, this reworking of the film by Darabont makes it a much creepier affair* and quite a nostalgia trip for fans. It's also probably the coolest DVD extra I've ever seen! * Oh, if only this idea would catch on in a big way, that re-doing horror films in shadowy B&W makes them scarier. Imagine the conversations between kids at the local Blockbuster: "Let's rent this horror movie - it's the unrated version." "No way, dude! Let's do this one instead! It's in Black And White!" "Oh, damn! I'm already scared!" (a fella can dream, right?)

Best Movie - Diary of the Dead
|
I saw Diary this past weekend and it was really terrific to see Romero zombies back on the big screen. The theater was packed two nights in a row - opening
night they were lined up down the block outside the theater - how often does that happen?
I really enjoyed the movie, and the hand held gimmick was much less obtrusive than in Cloverfield. In that one it really got in the way of my enjoyment of the film. It was overdone and overused and I felt nauseous during the film - not the case in Diary. It was handled much more subtly and with more regard for the viewer. Great effects with cameos by both Romero and Greg Nicetero. Fun stuff.

For the Hall of Fame: 3 nominees...the giants of early horror history for your bookshelf, Carlos Clarens and Denis Gifford. And for the third year in a
row--the indispensible Walt Lee, still the epitome as well as the vanguard of horror film research. My knowledge of the genre, my enjoyment of the genre, and
my appreciation of the genre would be much, much less without the groundbreaking work by these three gentlemen.

Michael Jackson, for the Monster Kid Hall of Fame.
No, actually I'm serious (I can see everybody laughing, rolling their eyes, and gnashing their teeth). Think about this: 1) Thriller - possible the most famous/successful horror-themed song of all time, and an incredible music video. Directed by John Landis. This would be his major horror street cred. 2) Ghosts - another long form horror-oriented music video, directed by Stan Winston. 3) Ben - title song to the killer rat film, and the original cover to the Ben album was altered to removed the offending rats. |

Screamin Jay Hawkins | ||

Screamin Jay was gonna be one of my choices this year as well. He was truly a founding father of shock rock, and definitely an influence on Cooper and Zombie
both. I just downloaded and listened to an interview with him the other day:
http://www.medialoper.com/hot-topics/podcasts/screamin-jay-hawkins-is-a-wild-man-so-bug-off/ I'll second that nomination, Gary - He definitely deserves to be included!! |
