Reminds me of the plethora of llama jokes in the opening titles to MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL. It's definitely a comedy animal. I think mooses got a bit of a ribbing there, as well. (OK, it's moose instead of mooses. But if it's goose/geese, why isn't it moose/meese?) Never knew about the Irwin Allen idea for JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, but do recall catching the Fox/Filmation Saturday morning cartoon series back in the Sixties. (Along with another Filmation animation series based on a Fox feature film, 1968's FANTASTIC VOYAGE.)

Jan 11 11 1:28 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Since he had no particular connection to Bernard Herrmann, I kinda doubt it. (Too bad. It is a fine score.) I don't know that he ever reused music other than on VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA, did he? And there, he just sensibly hired the guys who wrote the movie score to adapt it for series use, a much different bag o'worms.

The other day I threw on the documentary THE FANTASY WORLDS OF IRWIN ALLEN (along with its companion piece, LOST IN SPACE FOREVER) just to revisit some of those childhood memories of being a kid in the Sixties. Among the bonus features is a promo for THE TOWERING INFERNO in which we see Irwin zipping into the studio in his car, snatching up his mobile phone while driving and instructing his secretary to have his entire staff ready for a meeting in five minutes (or something along those lines). The overall effect was that every moment of his life was as dramatic as anything found in his films. As the promo plays out, you have to wonder if he was always "acting," as everything he did seemed to be an caricature of the stereotypical Hollywood mogul. If the three had ever been onscreen together, you get the feeling Allen might have upstaged the likes of Von Stroheim and DeMille.

I seem to recall he wanted to call the series SPACE FAMILY ROBINSON, but there was already a comic book with that title. (Gold Key, perhaps?) Although not similar in concept, Allen's THE TIME TUNNEL was close in title to Lester Del Ray's novel Tunnel Through Time (which I've always thought would make a decent film).
