BTW Also went through my copy of 7th Voyage (RH Signature Collection) during the dragon cyclops fight on the beach and subsequent dragon death and didn't see any gauges. Did see a sliver spec and green line from the cave at one point, but they could be film anomalies. Lots of color changes, too, which you don't see at full speed.

The two movies that best used CGI to me were Cloverfield and District 9, which both used it to render characters and scene details onto live scenes in ways that no other technique can adequately perform.

I know there is a gauge in the JASON trailer in a shot from the skeleton sword fight that was removed from the same scene in the release prints. That frame with gauge is printed in S.S. Wilson's book "Puppets and People" (if anyone has it and wants to check). Alan, The earliest film that I've found a gauge is KING KONG but I'm sure using them for stop motion goes back before that. I thought that his projector automatically moved one frame up after he took an exposure. If that was true, did he back the film up to expose that live action frame again, and would an extra frame be noticeable in some of the action shots? Mighty Joe Young, Son of Kong and the Harryhausen films have had the surface gauges and other support devices removed from the dvd releases. As far as Jack the Giant Killer goes, who cares about the surface gauge in the frame when the shot of the sea creatures tentacle wrapping around the giants leg is straight out on the ground in one frame in the middle of the shot. Maybe they had to work on the tentacle or the giant's leg and somehow took that frame? Tim

Tim Hi Tim, It seems that the gauges have all been removed from the DVD editions of Ray's films. I know I have them on laser disc but just now I'm too lazy to go dig my machine out and get it all hooked up again. I recall that Ray always seemed to have a clean frame when he left in a gauge but it's been years since I looked at them so I can't be completely sure of that. Perhaps when I get my new Mac running I'll try to get some frame grabs off the laser discs and post them. I don't know if Ray's projector automatically advanced with each exposure but I think that was mentioned somewhere.
