I first met him about 10 years ago when I began volunteering with The Hollywood Collector Show. It was easy to spark a friendship with Ben and, if he knew you were genuine, he was your friend for life. Subsequently when we did a show here in the San Francisco area, Ben attended and met my then 10 year old daughter. He took to her to her instantly and vice versa. Many free autographed items were given to her and twice as many photos taken. As time went on, she'd get an occasional envelope from Ben with another little something inside. Always with a fun note or quip "To Jamie." Those are the kinds of things that don't "have" to be done, but are done out of generosity and kindness. Ben had plenty to go around.
I could go on and on, but one story says it all for me. My daughter and I are big on pictures. The family adorns our walls. But, in one collage frame, next to Grandmas, grandpas, aunts and sisters, there is one of Jamie and Ben sporting huge smiles. Yes, I usually have to explain it, but I enjoy it every time. Just like I enjoyed seeing Ben throughout the years.
Sleep well, Ben. We'll all see you down the road sometime....with you in your shorts!

Aloha Ben Chapmen... and thanks for all the
great memories...
