Nov 25 08 12:18 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I see ABC Family is going to show a newly made special called A Miser Brothers Christmas in December (the 13th I think). I don't think it's made by Rankin / Bass but the characters are pretty close to the original figures used in Year without A Santa Claus, and it's done in stop motion animation, not CGI. Might be worth a look.

Nov 25 08 1:12 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Thanks for the heads-up! Glad to hear stop-motion is being used, unlike the CGI found in 2001's RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER & THE ISLAND OF MISFIT TOYS. (Although I do give that show credit for sticking to the original character designs.)

Nov 25 08 3:45 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF SANTA CLAUS was based on a book (text available online) by Oz creator L. Frank Baum. It has been filmed in 2000 as a 2D animated direct to video release and as a 1996 anime series in Japan. A company has recently announced a new CGI version. And check out www.rankinbass.com for lots of info on the company and its productions.

Oct 12 09 11:01 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Just picked up the new Special Edition of MAD MONSTER PARTY? from LionsGate. Sharp-looking transfers of both the feature film and the trailer, and some cool extras. Bonus features include a 14 minute "making of" featurette with onscreen interviews with Arthur Rankin and Rankin & Bass historian Rick Goldschmidt, a 10 minute featurette on the art of stop-motion with the guys from Screen Novelties (the guys who finished Harryhausen's TORTIOISE AND THE HARE), a featurette on the music of the movie with an interview with Maury Laws, and a couple of sing-along sequences. (The guys from Screen Novelties also share with us a surviving Rankin & Bass puppet, the little blind girl from THE FIRST CHRISTMAS {aka THE STORY OF THE FIRST CHRISTMAS SNOW.}) On a less positive note, I see the film is slated for a 2011 remake. Can't imagine this having the charm of the original's era.

Oct 12 09 12:45 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've never understood, even as a kid, the need to fill kid's shows with songs. Not everything has to be a musical. Some of the toons in MAD MONSTER PARTY are more annoying than others. I like the title toon, and the mummy song the skeleton band sings is fun. After that, I'm pretty content. (Maury Laws, in the featurette, talks about how Jules Bass would "spot" cues in the script; picking out places where he felt they should drop dialogue and throw a song in there to replace the lines. He also talks about how the title tune was inspired by John Barry's work on GOLDFINGER. Had never thought about it before, but it is a more "brassier" piece than usual.) While not an actual R&B film, I also picked up THE MISER BROTHERS' CHRISTMAS. Nostalgic in that it uses stop-motion, as well as brings Mickey Rooney back to voice Santa Claus once again. The tattoo's owner is suffering an image shack glitch and has asked me to post this for him. This tattoo adorns the arm of the lovely and talented heavymetalmonster, Frank. It's one of a tasteful array of MonsterKid oriented tattoos that decorate heavymetalmonster's flesh. I've only seen the photos of the skin art, of course, because frankly he's not that lovely and talented. Well --- okay, he's pretty talented, but not really that lovely.
