An e-mail I just received from David J. (OUTER LIMITS) Schow: Ladies & Gents, Tommy Kuntz has informed me that Maila Nurmi has passed.

Sorry to hear that Vampira has left us. The original TV horrror host, she was an original in more ways than one. It's amazing that in such a brief career
she managed to create a lasting icon with her sexy and spooky persona.

This is such sad news. Thank you for letting us know. Vampira was an inspiration and I had always hoped to meet her one day.

That's sad to hear. I wonder if she'll be mentioned in December when the media reviews on who departed during the past year.

What an individual - we can only be glad that there was a documentary with her recently, and I hope more footage and more of the stuff alluded to existing
trhough the Vampira's Attic site can come to pass, maybe a Vampira the Movie II.
I hope she driving a fast hearse with James Dean on the other side, having a great time. |

Who can ever forget Vampira in Plan 9... and footage used in the Chiller Theatre introduction.. those
outstretched hands... In the doc Flying Saucers Over Hollywood, she said she was thrilled to hear she would be playing against a dead man ( Lugosi).

I only know her from Plan 9, and her considerable legend, but there's a lump in my throat. RIP.

I also knew Vampira only from PLAN 9, but Maila was always interesting and funny in interviews that I've seen. Hate to lose her.
Legend, oh legend, the third wheel legend...always in the way.

Inappropriate comment at this time, perhaps, but I was never quite sure if I wanted to meet and try to talk with her or not. She kinda struck me as somebody
who lived on "another plane" -- not that fandom isn't full of folks who live on other planes, whether it's Planet Egoboo or Planet
Looneytunes or Planet Hammer-Films-Are-Art or Planet
I-Need-To-Keep-This-Ten-Dollar-Magazine-In-A-Plastic-Bag-Even-Though-Years-From-Now-It-Won't-Be-Worth-Two-Cents, and 1001 others. (Including Planet "I
Gotta Interview This Person That Only 20 People Remember In Hopes That Maybe Two People Will Read It.") But, reading interviews with her, and seeing
on-camera ones, I nnnnever was able to figure out what to even CALL her plane, or have any idea if I'd really be able to communicate with it. And I
wondered if I'd just be boring her or bothering her, and didn't want to do that. Has anybody here ever really "connected" with her? I
don't mean, ask her what the PLAN 9 soundstage was like and get some kind of an answer, but actually talked like "just folks" about real stuff?
What was she like?

Joe Moe posted elsewhere that she was a true 'bohemian,' and it made me smile because in the filmed interviews I've seen -- in VAMPIRA THE MOVIE
from Alpha and AMERICAN SCARY (not yet released on DVD) -- she did come across as a very artsy post-modern cynic, her hair all back in a tight nanny bun but
her eyes sparkling with intelligence and zest for what's next, or for what was left in her life.
It may be fitting that this year will mark the first year of a Best Horror Host (active), category in the Rondo Awards. The nominations will be in honor of Maila Nurmi and the still-with-us John Zacherle. Though her time in the genre was very short, her impact on all of us will be eternal. Sad news indeed... |

Tom, I never got to meet her, but am saddened to her of her passing nonetheless. The footage that exists of her show is very cool, and she had a great look
about her, all tall and sleek, slinky and creepy. First television host. Nice that you're honoring the new category in her name, David - and Zach's too
- good call!

One of the RUE MORGUE magazine honchos is e-mailing any-and-all that she "died in her sleep several days ago. She was 86. ... she passed away peacefully,
of natural causes." If you gotta go, that'd be the way, IMHO.

Here's a photo of Vampira in her classic hosting days:
And here she is recently with Kevin Sean Michaels, director of VAMPIRA THE MOVIE:

86 years isn't a bad run. She lived life her own way and probably enjoyed it more than most.
I was always kind of hoping someone could coax her into doing the convention circuit, strictly for selfish reasons. I really wanted to meet her, and sorry now I'll never get the chance. Cromwell |

What a shame. This folder seemed to be pretty inactive for a few weeks, and now this. Maila Nurmi kept a veil of integrity and secrecy for so many years, but
that iconic figure she created so strong, so visual.......Will be with us for generations to come. Not a bad thing at all.

Coincidence #1: Though not really a fan, I recently bought Vampira The Movie just because I thought it looked interesting (it is!).
Coincidence #2: Last night I chose to watch Plan 9 as I lay in bed. RIP Maila ~ RIP Vampira |

Like many have said, I never saw her as Vampira except in photos, only in Plan 9, but certainly anyone remotely connected with classic horror knows of her.
My mind is aglow with whirling, transient nodes of thought careening thru a cosmic vapor of invention. |
