You mean the Wallace Wood of newspaper strips? (Here with that other newspaper artist, Jack Kirby.)

Any samples of the progression? And how long did the editor allow it to continue before he spoke up?

I think you're confusing SKY MASTERS with CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN, the book Kirby was doing at DC (some of which were inked by Wood
"Sky Masters of the Space Force is an American comic strip created by Jack Kirby, featuring the adventures of an American astronaut. The strips, syndicated by the George Matthew Adams Service, were initially written by brothers Dick & Dave Wood, who had worked with Kirby on the DC Comics comic book Challengers of the Unknown. Later strips were written by Kirby. The original inker was the unrelated Wally Wood, who had also worked with Kirby on Challengers of the Unknown. Later strips were inked by Dick Ayers and the final months of dailies were both penciled and inked by Kirby. The deal with the syndicate was brokered by DC editor Jack Schiff. Schiff later claimed he was due royalties from Kirby's share of the strip's profits, and successfully sued Kirby at trial. [1] [2] The daily strip began 8 September 1958 and ended 25 February 1961. The Sunday strip, which told independent stories, began 8 February 1959 and ended 14 February 1960."

Michael Straczynski took over in 2001, the main title's sales were down to an incredible 30,000 a month, at least according to the latest Marvel Spotlight where he's interviewed. Supposedly his tenure got them back to 90,000 or so.
Wow, that's really low. Anyone remember the days when Batman's main title sold over a MILLION copies a month? Rod

I know that one of the aspects of the Marvel Essential line that I enjoy is the newsprint and that they smell the way comics used to smell. It's the little things that make me smile.
Yeah, I prefer the newsprint paper over the glossy. I think at least a few comics should be published in the old format, for a cheaper cover price. Heck, make it a monthly variant of a popular title. The completists out there would end up buying both versions, and the guy who just wants to read the new stories would be in luck too.
