Robbins, however, was a great cartoonist. I love all the weird angles, jutted jaws and twisted knees and elbows. With Robbins, you always knew what was going on in the story, and his run on The Invaders is an unappreciated gem.

"Carmine Infantino is Andru's soulmate in bad art"
Yowsa, Count - I think you're out on a limb, there.
Yes, his later stuff - like Kirby's, and Gil Kane's, and for that matter, Elvis's!, can seem like a parody of itself.
But at his peak? "Bad art?" Not to the eyes of tons of fans - and many of his peers (he's the guy Julie Schwartz chose to save a near-death Batman.) Maybe, "Art I don't like"?

but I'd never compare Batman's rogues' gallery to Spideys. Batman's enemies all seemed carbon copy and boring.
Maybe, "Art I don't like"?

I agree with you on Milgrom. The guy just couldn't draw. I have no strong like or dislike for Sekowsky. Robbins, however, was a great cartoonist. I love all the weird angles, jutted jaws and twisted knees and elbows. With Robbins, you always knew what was going on in the story, and his run on The Invaders is an unappreciated gem. He had the misfortune of following more "realistic" artists on various books, like Neal Adams on Batman and Michael Kaluta on The Shadow, and that contributes to fandom's general low regard of his work. But I still like his stuff for the same reason I like Ditko's -- it's singular, cartoonish and tells the story.

His cityscapes and vistas still resonate in my memory; his lithe Adam Strange leaping between worlds, two Flashes rushing to the rescue, talking gorillas you could believe in -- even his crazy talking hands used with silhouettes in Starnge Sports Stories -- all were the mark of a totally original artist and one of the all-time DC Silver Age greats, along with Kubert, Murphy Anderson, Curt Swan and Gil Kane. In later years, Infantino became incredibly freeform and even sloppy, but at his peak there was no one I enjoyed more in my comic book afternoons than a Barry Allen Flash chasing the Weather Wizard up a flight of icy stairs, with Central City lean and modern in the distance. david

Well, this is what makes horse races & football games, I guess.
To me, Joe is THE iconic Hawkman purveyor; one of the best War artists; and among Burroughs afficionados, his classic Tarzan run is considered to rank with Hogarth, Foster, & Manning.
Boy, that's a seed for a LONG thread; but I think you're really into Taste, there, not Fact.
Marvel, for one thing, was permanent home to such folks as "crucifier-of-other-artist's-work" Vince Colletta, and to "I'm o.k., but mainly here 'cause I'm the Bosses' brother" Larry Lieber.
The DC bench, over time? Simon/Kirby. Jerry Robinson. Joe Kubert. Jack Burnley. Lou Shwartz. Jim Aparo. Steve Ditko. Bernie Wrightson. Carmine Infantino. Gil Kane. Curt Swan. Neal Adams. Dick Giordano. Dave Gibbons. Mike Kaluta. Sam Glanzman. Murphy Anderson. Nestor Redondo. Etc...
