Sep 7 06 3:54 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I had a couple old 35mm prints in my garage for years... I knew one was an 'African safari' film... but until recently, I don't think I ever heard the word "Ingagi" Anyway... however many Ingagi prints are in existence [still don't know for sure]... there is now one more.!! My film is complete, & in good shape, but does show aging that you might expect of 75-year-old nitrate film. Judge for yourself from the scans. I intend to sell the film... but I'm in no great hurry to do so... I have already had some 'Hollywood' interest... but no calls from Peter Jackson [yet]... any serious comments regarding sale would be welcome. I'll try to keep up with this thread, but it may often be a day or two for me to reply. Someone had posted a photo [supposedly] from Ingagi awhile back... I don't believe this was from Ingagi, as none of the 'gorilla' scenes [or backgounds] look anything like the shot posted. This is the FIRST time I am posting these to any forum... I hope you enjoy them... Rob

How do you scan frames from it? And is there a story about how you acquired it? Maybe you'll license it to Criterion or somebody like that.That last frame looks a bit more like the Ingagi we know and love! Thanx for sharing.

Sep 7 06 8:38 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Some newspaper recently ran an endlessly long article about INGAGI and what a smash it was in its day -- I'm sure I printed it out for my files, if you need a copy. Library of Congress has a print or two of it, but unrestored.

Sep 8 06 10:28 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Thankx for your comments. The film was scanned w/flatbed scanner @1600 dpi... I had to manually wind the film by hand, so I have heard no sound... kinda hard to follow any storyline. The last frame posted is in the last few minutes of the film... this gorilla charges, & is shot...the end. I'll post a few more scans when I can... the faked "tortadillo" creature is interesting... I have seen NO other photos of this, anywhere.!! Over half the film is boring 'travelogue' stuff...but the film does have quite an interesting history. I would post the entire LA Times article from 1-6-06; but it's likely copywrited. I read the LA Times article and the description of the expedition stock footage is almost a perfect synopsis of the silent era GORILLA HUNT released in the latter part of 1926. GORILLA HUNT covered the Ben Burbridge expedition to Africa seeking to capture and bring back live gorillas (I cover this film briefly in part 2 of my Ape Fiends of the Silent Era article in the next MFTV magazine). Sep 10 06 1:55 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm not positive, but it may be that a certain amount of footage was shot for Ingagi proper, while some might've been gleaned from preexsiting films. Having not seen it, I'm relying on the chapter on Goona Goona films from the book Grindhouse: The Forbidden World of "Adults Only" Cinema. It claims that Cooper and Shoedsack adopted footage from their previous epics Heart of Africa and Chang for use in Ingagi. I think Ingagi appeared in 1930, while Chang was made in 1928 and Heart of Africa was produced in 1914. This might account for a possible variance in quality and cinematography. I'd posted a shot of a (man-in-suit) white gorilla that I believed was from Ingagi. It could be that the source I got it from was mistaken or that the specific shot occurs in one of the two earlier films. It's interesting that Ingagi uses both travelogue-style footage of apes and the man-in-suit effect. Grindhouse talks about how the film's producer tried to market the project in legit theaters as a fully authentic documentary. His efforts were undone when the Hays Office not only tracked down the actor who played the fake ape, but ultimately revealed that the film's pygmies were American children and the native women were cocktail waitresses from L.A. Having the actual film in front of you with its brilliantly clear imagery, you're in a far better position to evaluate it than I am. If the white ape doesn't appear, then we can definitively eliminate it as an actual still, which in the end is not much of a loss since these new stills are such terrific and unexpected finds. Sep 11 06 2:02 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hey there TidesOfWerewolves - your mention of the white gorilla got my brain a buzzing and I cracked the gorilla suit vault and rummaged about. The image your thinking of was posted on Diana Fox Jones' site about her dad, Charlie Gemora. The credit is somewhat suspect - I can't recall any mention of a white gorilla associated with INGAGI or seen another pic with this suit either. Perhaps it was a test suit? Very curious! The only albino apes I can recall are from Corrigan's films WHITE GORILLA and WHITE PONGO and also from an ABC Movie of the Week THE IVORY APE. Any other Great Whites I may be missing? And a big thanks to Robiss for sharing the images - I would love to see this film! Hopefully you can play a part in making it available to the public again. Best of luck!

Sep 12 06 10:15 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	yeh... I haven't looked at every part of the Ingagi film... & all the gorilla shots I've seen are in the last 20 minutes [aprx] of the film. Nothing like this 'white gorilla' is seen... lighting & backgrounds are even different... the WG photo looks like it was taken w/flash. There ARE [at least] two distinctly different gorillas in Ingagi... I guess the budget allowed for SEVERAL 'ape-suits'..!! History [see links posted in my prior message] mentions the ape kidnapping native women & showing 'ape-children' with bits of fur glued on them... I haven't seen this; but I could have easily missed it... most of the gorilla scenes are very short. I have 100 frames scanned from Ingagi on a private website, & would be happy to share them; but I'm somewhat concerned about my bandwidth usage... the site's primary use was for the promotion/sale of the film... I don't want to jeopardize this. If anybody offers to host a mirror-site... drop me a message...the total size is 27mb. The LA Times mentioned 1½ Ingagi prints in existence... I did a search for Ingagi on the Library of Congress website... with zero hits... it supposedly searches maybe a dozen archive sites. I'm sure not everything is in their database, either. Anybody know more about this..?? INGAGI was originally billed as a 'documentary...part of the Ingagi scandal involved the concoction of a breed of animal called a "tortadillo"... supposedly, a cross between a tortoise & an armadillo. Below are a couple frames of the fake "tortadillo" creature... I don't believe these have ever been posted anywhere before.... hope you like them, Rob.

Sep 13 06 8:16 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	that's a GREAT poster..!!... probably more than you realize... the Ingagi print I have, came from "Capital Moving Pictures" in Chicago. So, the same print that was used [in 1930] for the Majestic theatre in LaCrosse, WI, [in the poster] could have very well came from this supplier; since my print came from a Michigan theatre in 1931-32. There were, after all, only about 19 Ingagi prints ever made for the entire US. The poster could have been advertising the EXACT SAME film print that I now have..!!...cool...

OK, it's a piece of nonsense, but boy it looks like fun nonsense. In the wake of Jackson's KONG, there was a long article on the antecedents-- maybe here on this board. It's too bad this material wasn't available then.

Aug 25 07 3:51 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Speaking of GORILLA HUNT...I'm a volunteer at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. The museum has a "special collections" file on Roop (forgot his initials), who worked as an assistant stop-motion animator on THE LOST WORLD and did the dinosaur effects in comedy THE LOST WHIRL, not to mention sculpting some of the extinct mammal figures displayed at the Rancho La Brea Tar Pits. Among the items in the Roop collection is a scrapbook containing a good number of photos from a silent movie I believe is called THE GORILLA HUNT. It's all done in stop motion. The plot, judging from the photos, has something to do with a cowboy character (looking kind of like Tom Mix) and his family on a wagon train trip or expedition through the jungle, where they encounter two bigger-than-life gorillas (oddly, looking somewhat like the later Corrigan suits). And not only does the museum have the photos, it also has one of the stop-motion apes. The museum also has a Willis O'Brien collection including a scrapbook or two just loaded with unpublished photos from SON OF KONG. And I want to see INGAGI!!! Don
