CAPTAIN COMPANY Memories |

So, what cool stuff did you order through Captain Company, out of the old Warren magazines? I got many of the Warren back issues, some great iron-on transfers,
books, posters, too many things to name. And, do you still have any of that stuff?
My whole life I've been playing jacks with a square ball.

The one and only item I ever ordered from Captain Company was a doozy--the disembodied "crawling" hand, complete with jeweled ring! I'd looked at
that thing many, many times in the mags and finally begged my folks to buy me one. I wasn't disappointed! It came in a box, was a mechanized wonder with a
battery compartment in the bloody stump of a wrist, and actually crawled across the floor when you flicked a hidden switch. Granted, it made a whirring sound,
but hey, this was 1969! The outside of the hand was a kind of flesh-colored rubber that eventually deteriorated with age. Somewhere, I still have the skeletal
structure!

When I was much younger I ordered several back issues of Monster World and FM from Captain Company. It seemed to take f o r e v e r for them to deliver! I remember waiting for weeks for the mailman to come, hopefully carrying with him a manila envelope containing my goodies! I also remember in 1974 for a brief time Cap had original 1-sheets for Dr. No, From Russia With Love, and Goldfinger for sale. I wish I still had them! |

Yes! That was it! Oh, my Gawd, where did you find that pic? Do you have one of those hands?!

I never had a good experience with the Captain Company. I ordered a few back issues of FM, and (as cabmangray said) it took f o r e v e r for the stuff to
arrive. I should have learned my lesson, but I went ahead and bought their Darth Vader helmet in 1977 (it was the first Vader mask on the market). It took 6
months, numerous threats, and a call to the BBB before the item finally showed up on my doorstep. I still have the helmet, and the mere mention of the Captain
Company still makes me twinge!

I ordered back issues of FM & Monster World, and Screen Thrills Illustrated. Only disappointment was issue 26 of FM was sold out when I ordered it. My
first order took months because I foolishly sent cash. My ma wrote a letter and eventually I got my order except for the previously mentioned FM 26.

The photo above is an original box, but a 'replacement' (aka newer) hand. Pictured below is an original box and hand...

I ordered quite a few items from Captain Company, but the ones that come to mind right off the bat are MONSTER WORLD #7(the Son of Frankenstein issue),
HORRORS: FROM SCREEN TO SCREAM by Ed Naha(which I foolishly traded for a copy of Marvel's PLANET OF THE APES magazine; I have since gotten a new copy of
Naha's book), a Poe album(I can't remember which one), and some other back issues and books. I never really remember a problem with Captain
Company's shipping. If anything, they were faster than some other companies. DC Comics used to take a really long time to ship their Famous First
Editions and Limited Collectors Editions. It took forever to get those, but it sure was a thrill to see that giant cardboard envelope being slipped in the door
by the mailman.

Captain Company shipped from NYC. Living in Jersey City, my orders always came quickly. I ordered several back issues of FM, Creepy, Eerie, Vampi and The Spirit, completing my collection of the latter 4. I also ordered the Aurora Vampirella model, and several posters of Warren covers. I always thought the Company used very sturdy packaging. The back issues came in flat boxes, not envelopes. One of my prized item was the six foot tall Vampirella poster. I kept it for years. One day, when my future wife stayed over at my apartment, the tape holding the poster up gave way and the poster landed on her head! I guess Vampi was jealous! |

I did get some back issues in yellow envelopes, but, miraculously, none were ever damaged in the least. Other times back issues came in hard white cardboard "envelopes". Nothing ever took that long (in hindsight) although at the time 2 weeks seemed like forever!

Captain Company shipped from NYC. Living in Jersey City, my orders always came quickly. I'm in Philly, so that's probably why my stuff always arrived in a timely manner. Not being able to save a dime as a kid I never did get what I really wanted...those incredible Don Post monster masks and hands! Same here. The Don Post stuff may as well have cost ten grand apiece, that's how out of reach 39 bucks was for me when I was 10.

I was in Chicago, and my one or two Captain Company orders took the better part of a year to be filled.
That was better than Gothic Castle. I'm still waiting for those. |

The only thing I ever ordered were early issues of Creepy when I was in college and just getting back into collecting. My handle"Horrible Herman" is
from the gimmick offered in Capt. Co. ads in the good old days.I actually found a case of "Horrible Hermans" at a collectible show...neat stuff.I
always wanted that darn flight suit they offered for a while!Could anybody really afford those Post masks?I didn't dare to dream....

Horrible Herman was a little lead- bodied thing that looked like a fishing lure, sort of. HH had rubber band antennae, a feather glued to it's back, beady
red eyes (as I remember) and sprinkled with dark colored glitter. An ugly little bugger, and each came packed in a little green box. I have a dimestore shelf
display of them somewhere, if I come across it, I will take a pic and post.

All my back issues of FM came in envelopes. If I ordered 4, all would be stuffed in one envelope. I guess I was lucky they made it thru the mail.

My forum handle is therefore especially appropriate, because as fate would have ,I too make a rustling noise when someone wiggles me with their finger.

Yeah, but what do you do with the tissues?
