It doesn't sound so much like a synthesizer to me. The weird monster music sounds more like what you would get by playing around with (or modifying) the reverb on a quitar amp (like the sounds you hear on 60s surf guitar records). Everyone talks about the monster suits with the hot dogs/sausages coming our of the mouths, but there are actually two completely different type of monster suits used in the movie. The second type of suit is more of a non-descript design, like a blob with lots of seaweed covering the entire body, and no sausages in the mouth. I have a publicity shot of the second type of monster menacing a girl on a soundstage.

I get the impression the film was completed (or nearly completed) using the 'non-descript' monsters, and then extensively reworked to include the 'hot dog-mouth' creatures. Key scenes like the slumber party and the climactic battle show the primary cast members interacting only with the former, while the latter only appear in inserts.
Also, one of the non-descript creatures clearly loses it's arm to the trunk of the convertible; this was presumably the original source of the limb Dr. Gavin examines. It also seems likely that the girl who hid in the trunk would have survived, but we don't learn what became of her.
It's worth noting that the film was originally announced as 'Invasion Of The Zombies', and that '60s-era sources often indicated a running time of 82 minutes, which is four minutes longer than the version we know.
For the record, the Dark Sky DVD is missing a few seconds of dialog, from an exchange between Dr. Gavin and Hank during the aforementioned arm-examination scene. The missing portion is in brackets:
Dr. Gavin: If a human body - a drowned person - were attacked by tiny sea plants, which became parasites and completely...[infiltrated that human body before it had a chance to decompose, would the body be considered dead or alive?]
Hank: Dead?

I thought they were fine...until now! A heck of a lot better than the older versions I've seen, but believe me, I'm not much of an expert on these matters. (but I do know that Don May ought to be involved in more horror restorations - Synapse is a fine example of quality work all around. I..think?) Gil
