I find many touches in this film to be great - it may be the most dreamlike 80's horror outsite the the Elm Street films. Elements I like: the urban-legend
style telling of how the cursed record was made by the doomed metal band; the believable geeky friends; the monsters are strange, particularly when the giant
one falls to the ground and becomes a mass of little monsters; the way the house is slowly stuck in the neatherworld created by the gate that seemingly alters
the laws of physics; the kid lead who makes some bad choices and seems to have no way of stopping hell from coming to earth. The sequel isn't the best in
the world, but I give high marks to the original as a spooky and fun time at the movies.

Got to agree with you. It has been a while since I watched it, but I remember liking it a lot. It is a fun little movie. Thanks for reminding me about this
one. I'm thinkin' a double feature this weekend of The Gate and Monster Squad.

It HAS been a long time for me as well seeing this cool little late 80s movie. It's no masterpeice but it is alot of fun. I remeber really diggin that
movie, I was maybey 13 when it came out so I was the perfect age to appreciate it. SO many great little movies from the 80s. I say great little becuase they
are modest pictures but they have alot of originality and fun to them, even thouh these types are forgoton. Monster Squad yep that is anohter. You know what
movie is kind a cool that is not scary at all is My Best Friend is A Vampire? That was a fun little movie from the 80's, not horror per se but..... well it
is a Vampire theme. Where in the world would I find the Gate to rent in this day and age? Is it avaible on DVD? Since the movie stores changed over to DVDs
many great little movies have gone lost. I have been really wanting to watch Terror Vision latlety but won't be finding that movie anytime soon.

Is this the movie that starred a big-headed Stephen Dorff?

Just caught this on Showtime Beyond and I had forgotten how much fun this movie was. I remember my friends and I going to the theater to see Ishtar
and somehow wound up seeing this instead ( don't worry I've suffered through Ishtar since) Terrific little sleeper with wonderful retro
special effects and stop motion animation and some genuine scares along the way. This was Stephen Dorff's debut film This was directed by Tibor Takacs, who
went to make the lesser Gate 2: The Trespassers, but also made the underrated I, Madman. He now seems to be making a living directing Sci-Fi
Channel originals.

Hey yeah, I saw one of Takacs' flicks yesterday on Sci-Fi, Ice Spiders I think it was. My interest waned about an hour in and I gave up. I'd like to
see The Gate again, though.

The Gate rocks! Still love it after all these years. I had a chance last year to see it on the big screen again when our local art house theater held their
annual Scream-O-Rama, a dusk to dawn horror film festival. The Gate was only one of the movies they played that night. I got to also see Return of the Living
Dead, Prom Night, Demons, Evil Dead 2, Near Dark.

I lvoe The Gate. I told my girlfriend about the special effects, so we set down to watch it. At first you just see some optical effects, which are dated and
less than stellar. She began to roll her eyes at me. But when the little imps showed up, and seemed to pull on the kid's leg and stand right next to him,
it seemed to real she almost gasped. "Told you!" I said. To this day, that's some of the best effects work I've seen from the 80s.
Consider the true cost of living with Clown Phobia.

I found a used copy of The Gate at a local swap meet, and figured for $4 how could I refuse? As I watched it, I found myself thinking, "oh yeah, this is
where such and such happens;" I hadn't seen it since the 80s as a teen and a lot of it really started coming back. I had forgotten that the first half
of the film is a bit slow. It's a good 40 minutes or so until the monster stuff gets going, but when it does...boy howdy! It's almost an Evil Dead for
the PG-13 set. Ditto on the imps, those things are creepy! There are some shots that had me scratching my head wondering how they did it...impressive effects
for what I imagine must have been a low-budget movie,or was it? Fun stuff. I also remember having a crush on the big sister (I was only about 11 or 12 when it
came out).

I love the Gate, and interestingly enough, I had no idea there was a sequel....BUT I was at a used CD/DVD store at the beach this summer and they had a copy of
The Gate 2 for $5. I have yet to watch it, but I will report back. (I don't have high expectations, as Dorff is not in it...)

Omega Man wrote:I just got THE GATE: MONSTROUS SPECIAL EDITION and watched it. Great fun!!! BTW ~ Most of the "minion" creature effects (referred to as "imps" in this thread) were not stop-motion at all, but rather FORCED PERSPECTIVE (ala Darby O'Gill And The Little People). They were also shot at slower frames-per-second so they would move in the bizarre fashion that they do. All of this effects info is covered in the extensive extras included on this new Special Edition of THE GATE. Highly recommended 80's monstuh fun!
