I think that ass-holyness goes hand in hand with the (satyrical) superhero (or superhuman) theme once you reach a certain point in the hero culture. One of the reasons I hated Interview With A Vampire was that everyone in it was an asshole, the one redeeming aspect of the movie (as opposed to the novel) was that it is acknowledged there. Also see (among others) Futurama. I haven't seen Hancock, but it seems to me that is a big aspect of it. Could you actually have a humble superhero? Maybe (the original) Underdog... If you love old school make-up and anamatronics, you'll love the detail they go into covering the various techniques used to create all the monsters and creatures.

Dec 11 08 4:53 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Aside from the fact that I feel that Steve Biodrowski doesn't know what the hell he's talking about in reguard to the plot devices employed in Hellboy II and can't even get the spelling of the villian's name right - its Nuada not "Naruda" - I just want to point out that the character's not being likeable is a relative opinion. Some people, like myself and director Guillermo Del Toro for that matter - like Hellboy. As Myers says in the first film "we love people for their faults." As for the film being "wiling to forgive them for everything, as if they deserve some kind of special dispensation" thats the way it is in the comics. Hellboy quits the B.P.R.D. in the comics because the organization is more concerned with the keeping up protocol than with looking out for its agents, which is exactly what happens in the film too. Freaks have to stick together. As for the film dropping from #1 to #5 I prescribe sole blame to The Dark Knight, not because it was a better movie but because it stared Mis-spellings are always embarrasing, but they do not undermine the point of an argument. It would be interesting to hear you give some specifics regardng plot devices instead of simply saying I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. The "that's the way it was in the source material" argument never impresses me much. The question is whether something works in the film; simply being faithful in and of itself is not a virtue. The idea that Heath Ledger's death boosted DARK KNIGHT to such a degree that HELLBOY 2 suffered at the box office - well, that seems a bit of a stretch to me. Remember, HELLBOY did not drop to #2 behind the Batman film; it dropped to #5 - behind MAMA MIE, HANCOCK, and JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH. I suppose you could argue that DARK KNIGHT sucked up all the superher dollars at the box office, but then why did HANCOCK hold on better? Feb 23 09 6:21 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Saw it again on DVD. One of the trolls at the market has a Kodama head. And yeah. Hellboy is an asshole, but that is why you have someone like Krauss, someone who is so by-the-book that he is instantly disliked, yet he is truly the nice guy in the movie. Sort of like Flanders to Homer. Homer hates him, but then Homer is a boor. Flanders truly does not deserve the treatment the Simpsons' writers have given him. I think the original idea was correct. Since Flanders is righteous God should do right by him. But the later writers have screwed up the concept. Maybe they'll later do a Book Of Job on him. I sure hope so. Later: There were a few additional comments I wanted to make, but right now I can't remember them, I didn't note them down. For now I'll just mention that some of the lame stuff in the film is the early portion's Men In Black nods, and some of the cool stuff is the Bunuelian demon at the end, just so I don't forget. Another thing is that the Golden Army bots reattaching themselves after getting destroyed reminded me of The Iron Giant doing the same thing. What is the origin of the demon with the architectural head? I know I've seen the concept before, but can't place it. Maybe somewhere in my fantastic design books? Watch the funny way in which Hellboy accepts the Cuban cigars (shades of Bride.) It's a combination of Spielberg and Harryhausen and the classic creature make-up shows from the 80's, if that makes any sense. The troll market scene is pretty amazing. If you ever want a treat, listen to Del Toro's commentary. He talks about story, creature design, etc.
