It has been annouced that ELVIS ON TOUR is comming out in Blu this fall, along with 17 other Elvis films ( I assume from Warners). So TICKLE ME might be comming out too! I want to get ELVIS ON TOUR, but since it's a concert film I don't feel any pressing need to have it on BD. Darn shame that Blu-ray came along so late.

I just recently bought a box set of Elvis films. I was surprised at how few of his films I've actually seen and only now have begun to explore the "King's" film work. Don't see myself upgrading them to Blu now. If they only came out sooner. Cromwell

Feb 3 10 10:00 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	So yesterday I wanted to pick up the new WOLF MAN on DVD, and I had $75 worth of Best Buy gift cards from Christmas to use up. My idea was to try and snatch some of the Blu-rays I've been meaning to get but haven't bought up to this point. Well, I got there when the doors opened at 10:00, and when I got back into my car the clock read 11:17. In other words, I'd spent well over an hour desperately trying to find SOMETHING worth buying with my gift cards! The fact is, as we know, the stores are just not stocking many of the titles we want, and that sucks. Oh, I was able to find the WOLF MAN disc okay (only 4 copies, and even that's only due to the upcoming remake) but after that it was a chore. But the reason I'm posting this in the "Blu-ray" thread is because of the same old new dilemma I've faced in my ever-present shuffling back and forth with my high definition. Namely, that SD is already superb on my HDTV and upconverting player! For example, I finally bought THE HAPPENING yesterday, but even with a gift card I decided I'd go for the $9.99 standard DVD over the overly priced $29.99 Blu-ray! I knew that the SD would look amazing on my system, no need for a Blu-ray... and especialy NOT at 30 bucks when I can get the SD for 10! Screw that! I love the original 1980 FAME, which has now been issued on Blu-ray; but I put it back on the shelf when I realized I already own the old DVD. Now, I did decide to buy ROBOCOP and GRAN TORINO on Blu-ray though, because they were cheaper priced (on sale) and I didn't own them on DVD already. But again -- last night some friends and I watched the regular DVDs of THE DEVIL'S RAIN (Dark Sky) and THE BROTHERHOOD OF SATAN (Sony). Both of these DVDs looked outstanding -- and my friend (who still isn't sold on Blu-ray at all) remarked how excellent these images looked. I had to agree with him -- they were just fantastic. Even IF -- and that's probably a huge IF, as they're still claiming physical discs are dying out - there were ever Blu-rays issued for DEVIL'S RAIN and BROTHERHOOD OF SATAN (or any other number of older movies) I am so seriously beginning to think I just don't need or care about the Blu-rays. When I have the movie on Blu-ray I watch that one. Otherwise I use the Ultimate Edition versions. The Blu-ray discs just smoke the versions on the regular DVD's. I did some scene for scene comparisions on FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE and GOLDFINGER, and there just isn't a comparision. Now some of the DVD transfers look pretty good-ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE in particular has never looked better on home video-but the Blu-ray versions just kill the regular DVD's. I am using a front projector with an 80"+ screen, so that may make the differences appear more noticable. On the other hand, I watched Hitchcock's SUSPICION on regular DVD and can't imagine it looking crisper or more filmlike on BD. But I think widescreen color films gain the most benefit from high definition. Black and White 4:3"stuff looks pretty darn good on regular DVD. I've upgraded a few things to BD that looked terrible on standard and shouldn't have: new releases like Indy IV for example. New things I buy on blu. But if I don't have it and it's been available on standard and I don't have it? I don't want it. Which means catalogue releases. After almost a year of having the player, I love it. I also am fine with the movies I already own and can't justify upgrades anymore. And I'm saying this while having contemplated the new Wolf Man release in another thread- but I think I'm gonna be firm with myself on that one, too. I'm realizing that if I'm comparing a version to another one to justify it, then I'm feeling like it needs justification, which by definition to me is not a good way for me to spend money on account of my lack of disposable income.

Unless you buy from Amazon, most BDs are still $30 or more - which is too much for most people - and it's doubtful that Blu-Ray can survive on Amazon sales alone. These discs clearly aren't going to be in B&M stores much longer unless the price drops. Some of the Blu-Rays at my local BB are $39.99, and it looks they've been sitting there for years.

Feb 4 10 6:04 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I resisted jumping on the Blu-Ray bandwagon for two years and seriously resisted the temptation for the past year. One reason was that I was concerned when I heard about loading times and firmware updates. When I hooked up my unit to my television it took about five minutes and I was done. It was easy. Initially I was interested in Blu-Ray for the upconversion of standard dvd to 1080p and the unit does make standard dvd, even dvd-r, look better than ever. I was also put off, like Professor X, by the price of the discs. I have about three dozen discs and the most I've paid for any of them is $19.99 for the three disc edition of Star Trek. I've taken advantage of sales and coupons to bring down the costs of most of the Blu-Rays I've purchased. As the main coupon I used has expired that may change, but from what I've seen recently in WalMart and Target it seems that Blu-Ray is generally within a couple of dollars of the standard dvd price. I would expect that as the back catalogue of titles increases that sale prices on Blu-Ray titles will become more common. Titles that I've purchased for $15 or less would include both of the Daniel Craig James Bond movies, all six of the Harry Potter movies, Peter Jackson's King Kong, District 9, Up, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Enchanted, Rambo, 3:10 to Yuma, and on and on. There are few movies at this point that I would be willing to pay more than $20 for. If a title is a popular title it will, more likely than not, be available for less than $20 somewhere during its first week of release. If it isn't chances are good that it will be included in a sale somewhere after its first month or two of release. The price should also drop as market penetration increases. Home Media Magazine is reporting today that the Michael Jackson concert video This is It sold 1.2 million copies during it's initial week of release. Of the 1.2 million units sold 21% of the units were Blu-Ray copies. And 58% of all of the copies of WWII in HD that were sold were Blu-Ray.

That's how I do virtually all of my Blu-ray shopping these days. But the point was, I had these Best Buy gift cards, and while in their store I couldn't get it for less than $29.99.

Everyone says the film looks better on this new disc, but without A/B'ing them, I would never have noticed (I watched it and it looked fine. So does my old single disc of The Wolf Man). I'd just add that the major step up in viewing quality that has come from the HDTV experience has to be attributed to the technology in the Panasonic Plasma TV I watch. The black levels are nothing like I'd ever imagined I'd ever see on a TV set. When given a quality signal - either straight HD feed or an upscaled signal from a well mastered SD - the results are really stunning. I use a Denon and am really satisfied with the upscaling and the marvelous audio it gives to my amp. I also can't help but notice that when an image is very clean, and brightly lit, it tends to get that astounding clarity. For TV shows like Cash Cab, Letterman, Soccer games it is a real treat. Recent films like, for example Punisher War Zone just shine. But what truly impresses me a lot is how nice it makes many of my old treasured films look. Again provided they were mastered well from good source material/prints. Being an old audiophile I regard the speakers as responsible for much of the quality of your soundscape and likewise the amazing upgrade that has become HDTV - the TV's themselves is just killer and should get much more credit than I hear in lots of discussions. People tend to focus on the BR or SD disc, all well and good, and the player, again all well and good. But a high quality HDTV that you take the time to set up right and adjust the levels for is responsible for much of the look. So yeah, bow down to that cool HDTV in the room more, that baby truly carries much of the load. For the record, for me, for the look of movies I'll take plasma over LCD any day.

And ultimately, though I love extras for certain faves, especially for my beloved Uni Monsters, the quality of the film itself will always be the biggest sell for me. Plus the Skaal Doc and Weaver commentary are pretty definitive for me, if I'm gonna be spending that much time with The Wolfman. Though I totally get the impulse to want the new stuff.
