Sep 20 09 8:59 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	You got it absolutely, Richard. The novel (almost a novella, really) reads like a damn movie. I never understood why somebody didn't just hand out copies of the paperback to cast and crew and say, "We're shooting this." All three adaptations are messes, in varying ways. I actually had hopes for the Will Smith version until the creatures arrived onscreen and showed just how stupid, unrealistic and ineffective even expensive CGI can be.

Aug 4 10 9:45 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Saw this for the first time last night. Quite enjoyed it. Although for me,not as good as The Omega Man the film does have it's moments. I wonder if George Romero was inspired by this, as the scenes where the vampires slowly walk up and start banging on the door reminded me of Night of the Living Dead.

It seems like fans of the film always saved the stills of Price and the vampires. The rarest ones in the set are of the children at the birthday party, the newscaster talking about the plague and the preisdent or prime minister from TV. Here are a few I just bought Dennis

It kind of gets at the Matheson ending sideways, and doesn't have the power of the novel, but I give it credit for at least attempting such a downer of a book.

Romero told a story about meeting Richard Matheson once ( this was after NIGHT's release and the film's copyright debacle that ensued) and Romero admitted to Matheson that I AM LEGEND was the story that gave him an idea for NIGHT. Matheson said to him half jokingly " Well I don't remember seeing any money fom that" to which Romero replied: " Don't feel bad...neither did I!"

No amount of money,star power, or CGI have captured the tone, the grim essence that this modest production puts out. A terrific example of make use of what you have and we'll remember you... "The Omega Man" is rather SF-oriented with some suspenseful sequences, but "The Last Man on Earth" is above all a horror movie, and an excellent one. I know that Matheson didn't like the movie, but writers are rarely the better judges about an adaptation of their work. Remember that H.G. Wells disaproved "The Island of Lost Souls", by far the best adaptation of his novel. And I'm not sure that Mary Shelley would have liked the two James Whale masterpieces, neither...

Cahn's INVISIBLE INVADERS gave both later films a blueprint of the Walking Dead on screen. "You can't smell any reefer, can you"?

I'm pretty sure that despite the IMDB listing, Matheson had nothing to do with the production (and didn't see a dime from it).

Nov 10 11 12:21 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	For many years, the image of that terrible pit, with the smoke billowing up from the thousands of burning bodies, was stuck in my head; however, I couldn't recall what film it was from! I had seen LMOE when I was about 7, and for many years I was puzzled about where I had seen that scene. I began to think I had imagined it. Then, I saw LMOE again in my mid twenties and instantly recognized it. That's such a powerful, disturbing image. Since then I've watched LMOE many times. I think the strength of the film is in Morgan's despair. Yes, the zombies/vampires are pathetically weak -but the damage they do is emotional. Despite the film's flaws, I find it very affecting. And I like Omega Man too. But I see it as more of an action flick. Neville's loneliness is far more interesting than the albino weirdos, who really kind of bring down the film for me.
