I agree. I think that the British version is the better - and incidentally Anton Walbrook / Adolf Woolbruck WAS a star in Europe - even if the other actors, with the notable exception of Robert Newton, are less known...
In this case, as for "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", the same company, MGM, decided to make glossy remakes of earlier movies - both of them with Ingrid Bergman, coincidentally - and tried to hide the older, and much better, versions in some vault.
