Maybe I caught it too late in life (only last year!), but I found it to be dull and dated, and even the acclaimed story with the dummy had been done better since. Underrated: THE JUNGLE CAPTIVE - Absolutely no classic, but a brisk-moving and textbook monster/mad scientist/assistant film that delivers on every level. Also the best chance to see Rondo Hatton deliver the most goofy dialogue!

My selection for Underrated would be....Le Corbeau, though even as acclaimed as it is, the French La Belle et La Bete (BEAUTY AND THE BEAST) deserves even more acclaim than it has been given.

Over rated, I think I'd go with JEKYLL/ HYDE,I prefer the more horrific silent and 30's version.The best scenes in the 40's film happen durring a dream sequence.....and thats wimping out.

Fox's UNDYING MONSTER is always being called an "unsung gem" (in fact, now it's never called anything else, even though it stopped being "unsung" 20 years ago) -- and Fox's DR. RENAULT, which really IS unsung, is ten times the movie UNDYING is, IMHO.

I love BRIDE but do not find it a masterpiece. perhaps have seen it too often too long. Needs the cut footage to make it more compelling. and I wish the final scenes would go on longer. underrated: MACABRE 1958, NOT OF THIS EARTH 57

Jul 30 05 8:42 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	<< I find it tiresome though brutal but no real involvement. << It's kind of a mini-favorite of mine amongst the unheard-of horror oldies but, yes, you're right -- it's a movie that gives us a murderer, and puts him on a boat with a whole bunch of potential victims, and the whole point of the movie is just watching him gruesomely bump off these people. It's ahead of its time in its "killings for the sake of killings" approach.

Naish's apeman generates genuine pathos. And THE MAD GHOUL is lurid, briskly paced, packs a punch or two (Scoop McClure's death) and I love the EC Comics-style comeuppance at the end. GARY L. My wife and I found this utterly gripping--perhaps one of the tensest films of the 30s. It's opening/closing framework is also beautifully eerie. As for the 40s: Underrated: THE SEVENTH VICTIM. I think it's one of the best films of the decade, any genre.

Jul 31 05 9:37 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	CAPTAIN APPLEJACK is too awkwardly staged to be quite as good as a synopsis makes it sound, but it does contain the most outrageous example of pre-code misbehavior I've ever encountered: fantasizing about life as a pirate captain, the hero is shown brazenly groping the breasts of a beautiful captive, while she rolls her eyes and exclaims "Dio mio!" I nearly fell out of my chair when I saw that, late one night on TCM.

Jul 31 05 10:32 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	CAT PEOPLE, CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE and DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE are over-rated. FMTWM, THE MAD GHOUL, NIGHT MONSTER, THE BLACK CAT and MAN-MADE MONSTER are under-rated. Additionally, the Lon Chaney-Kharis films are overly criticized.
