I first became aware of Evil Dead in my early teens. I was really getting into underground heavy metal at the time (and what metal in the late 90's wasn't underground?), and within that scene all three of these films are held in very high regard, particuarly the first one. One could argue with a little research that Evil Dead was one of the biggest non-musical influences on early death metal in the 80's.
But anyway, the first one I saw was Evil Dead II, and it's still my favorite of the three. I found a VHS of it at our local Alco (kind of a crappy Wal-Mart that's in some towns in the south). I was 13 and my parents had to make some kind of trip for a day or two, and I think it was the first time I was left to my own devices for so long. I ended up watching it twice in one day, I thought it was fantastic. There's some super creepy stuff like the corpse dance, intense stuff like having to saw through his girlfriend's head and cut off his own hand, and then just all the laugh-out-loud slapstick. I love the part when Ash is going insane and all the stuff in the house is coming alive. When he does the little dance in unison with the lamp I always lose it. My brother and I love this film, and much like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, his wife hates it. He showed it to his ten year old son last Halloween, and he loved it!
I like the first one for the creepiness and "real ingenuity on a budget" factor. More parallels with TCM there. Army of Darkness is just a cool movie. I had a room mate for about half a year that was obsessed with it, he had tons of posters and figures from it. He liked the first two as well, but Army of Darkness was his thing. I think he's blowing up old munitions for the military now.
